BACKGROUND: The City of Kitchener was awarded a major international women's hockey event, the Four Nations Cup in the spring of 2006. The event is scheduled for November 7-11, 2006 at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium Complex. This report provides a brief progress update for the event. REPORT: The Four Nations Cup involves the top four female hockey teams in the world representing Finland, Sweden, U.S.A. and Canada. These teams won gold, silver and bronze in the most recent Olympic games held in Turin, Italy in February. The event is held in Canada once every four years. Kitchener was the host site in 2002 and now again in 2006. The event partners include Hockey Canada and the Ontario Women's Hockey Association. The planning process is well underway and ticket sales have commenced. The volunteer host committee executive committee has been recruited and excellent leadership is in place to ensure the success of the event. These individuals have begun to recruit the 400 volunteers that will be responsible for delivering the program elements. The event begins with an opening ceremony reception in the Rotunda on Monday, November 6th. Two of the games are televised nationally on TSN and the game schedule is as follows: Tues. The total revenues for this event are projected to be $385,000 against expenses of $355,000 resulting in a projected surplus of $29,879. The surplus is shared on a 75/250/0 basis in favour of the OWHA. In 2002 the event generated a surplus of $48,000. The Aud is responsible for the downside risk should the event not produce a profit. The event is primarily funded through ticket sale revenue and to date $57,000 of the $347,000 ticket sale target has been achieved. This is tracking ahead of 2002 so the Host Committee has confidence the ticket revenue target will be achieved. The Marketing Committee is currently working on a number of co-promotions with various provincial hockey associations. The full advertising campaign will roll out immediately after Oktoberfest and it is at that point that the Committee expects to see sales increase significantly. The event is being held in conjunction with Kitchener Minor Hockey Associations' annual Fallfest Girls Hockey Tournament. Over 800 players and team reps plus their families will be in Kitchener the weekend of the tournament. It is expected most will attend the event and this will have a significant positive financial impact on the event! CONCLUSION: The Four Nations Cup is an excellent event for the community. It will have a positive economic impact, creates significant community spirit and pride and provide direct economic benefits for the Auditorium.
