BACKGROUND: The late Arnold Elmslie began construction of a private course known as Doon Valley in 1955. It was completed 50 years ago in 1956. The actual golf course, (and some adjacent lands which later became the site for Conestoga College), was purchased for $340,000 by the City of Kitchener in 1966 after leasing it for three years. This scenic 6200 yard, par 72 golf course, located along the banks of the Grand River, is celebrating its 50th Anniversary celebration being held to honour its legacy. REPORT: The general public is invited to celebrate the milestone by taking advantage of an all day golf special that includes a green fee, cart, 50th anniversary memorabilia and a luncheon barbecue on Monday May 31, 2006. City of Kitchener Council and officials, Golf Association of Ontario representatives, media & golf course members are invited to attend a ribbon cutting ceremony that will take place at 11 :30 a.m. This ceremony will include a time capsule that will be officially committed to be opened in 2056. FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: The budget for the Doon Valley 50th merchandise, time capsule, plaque, and BBQ lunch is $5,000. It is being funded from 2006 Doon Valley General Provisions Capital account. -2- COMMUNICATIONS: Invitations have been sent out. An article has been put in Your Kitchener. A media release will be done and posters have been posted in clubhouses and various city locations. CONCLUSION: This special celebration is important to acknowledge the heritage of Doon Valley Golf Course. The event will provide spin-off promotion of an excellent municipal service.
