VICTORIA HILLS COMMUNITY CENTRE EXPANSION
PROJECT UPDATE

For information only.
BACKGROUND:
In the Leisure Facilities Master Plan (LFMP), under 4.3 Resource Centre Facilities,
recommendation 19 states: "That the Victoria Hills expansion be undertaken in 2005 including a
Business Plan approach based on existing input and research related to:
· The development of a new multi purpose room,
· The internal reconfiguration and the addition of the needed support space requirements,
and
· An assessment of the kitchen requirements to ensure the level of investment reflects the
types of use that will actually occur, e.g. Event support and community Kitchen."
In April 2005, the Victoria Hills Community Centre expansion business case was brought
forward, report CSD-05-001, recommending the construction of expanded space at the
community centre "due to the potential for population growth in the area, the detailed
planning completed to date, and the fit with the criteria relative to the advanced state of
activity that has been realized." The business case was subsequently approved by Council.
This report provides a bulleted update on the project's progress.
REPORT:
The following milestones have already been met.
· April VHCC Expansion Business Case approved CSD-05-001 April 18th 2005.
· Snider Reichard March Architects were awarded the project in July of 2005

· A stakeholders meeting was held on July 19th with the project team, Architects, and staff
for the 1 % Public Art criteria.
· A public meeting was facilitated on August 22nd 2005 to determine whether the Centre's
addition would be built to the North or the West in Gzowski Park. The decision was to
build to the west. The total size of the facility would be 16,372 square feet upon
completion.
· A three-day open house with site drawings was made available to the public for their
comments and review from Sept 19th to the 21 st of 2005.
· PM Contracting Ltd was awarded the tender as the VHCC project General Contractor,
approved by council on April 15th 2006.
· May 1 st 2006 Nicholas Rees was approved by Council as the Artist for the VHCC
Expansion project. The artwork is titled "Toyland" and has a community component to
the artwork.
· May 4th 2006 A Ground Breaking Ceremony was held where there were approximately
520 people in attendance. The event received press coverage from the radio, T.V., and
newspaper.
· December 2006 is the anticipated completion time of the VHCC Expansion Construction
project.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
· The recommended cost was $2.4 million.
· The project budget cost was approved at $2,334,700
· The construction budget is $1.6 million.
· The project is on budget and on schedule.
