2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES AND REVIEW OF AGENDA
As there was no quorum for the meeting, no actions can be taken, but items can be discussed.
A motion was made by Martin, seconded by Sivakumar, to approve the minutes of the June
meeting. All were in favour; carried.
3. NEW BUSINESS
3.1 Tax Credit for Physical Activity -John Cooper and Saleh Saleh
Both John and Saleh attended the meeting to provide details on the proposed tax credit for
parents whose children take part in sports activities.
• A committee has been formed to work on details of the program, such as what will be
eligible.
• The purpose of the program is to encourage children to take part in physical activity.
• A comment regarding the program is that people who will benefit are the ones who are
already doing something -what about people who are active but do not belong to a club or
organization. As well, the program will not encourage people from lower income groups
who cannot afford to joint a sports group, etc., to take part. The program also does not
acknowledge the benefits of arts and culture activities to a person's mental health as Tax
Credit is geared to physical activity only.
The deadline for input to the committee is September 15, 2006.
ACTION:
A motion was made by Martin, seconded by Annalee, that Peter and Martin meet to discuss
this issue, draft a recommendation and forward to Council on behalf of ACAC. All were in
favour; carried.
