NAMING / RENAMING OF SECTIONS OF NEW DUNDEE
ROAD
RECOMMENDATION:
That the City of Kitchener Council support the Region of Waterloo's recommendation to
rename a section of New Dundee Road to Conestoga College Boulevard.
BACKGROUND:
Transportation Planning is in receipt of a letter from Nancy Button, Supervisor, Traffic
Engineering, for the Region of Waterloo, requesting comments and/or endorsement by City of
Kitchener Council of a proposal to rename a section of New Dundee Road to Conestoga
College Boulevard.
The Ministry of Transportation of Ontario has planned the reconstruction of the interchange of
Highway 401 with Homer Watson Boulevard, with construction expected to commence in 2005,
to be completed in 2007. This revised interchange will result in the development of an extended
New Dundee Road connecting directly into Homer Watson Boulevard opposite the existing
westbound off-ramp from Highway 401 onto Homer Watson Boulevard. This will necessitate the
existing section of New Dundee Road, running from Homer Watson Boulevard opposite
Conestoga College Boulevard through to this proposed extended New Dundee Road, to be
renamed. The Region of Waterloo is proposing that this section of New Dundee Road be
renamed Conestoga College Boulevard. This renaming is proposed to take effect in early 2007
to allow sufficient time for the affected businesses to prepare.
Please find attached a copy of the Region's letter, which includes Figure 1 outlining these
proposed changes.
REPORT:
The renaming of this section of New Dundee Road will be required due to the fact that the
development of the realigned New Dundee Road would result in two separate sections of
roadway having the same name, which is contrary to the City's Street Naming and Addressing
Policy.
- 2 -
Renaming this section of New Dundee Road to Conestoga College Boulevard would address
the requirements of the Policy, as this new section to be named Conestoga College Boulevard
would be an extension of the existing Conestoga College Boulevard east of Homer Watson
Boulevard.
The Region of Waterloo has notified the affected properties of this road renaming proposal, with
five (5) responses received. Two (2) responses support the proposal, while three (3) responses
oppose the proposal due to the financial impact on their business/institution of an address
change.
As this name change meets the requirements of the City's Street Naming and Addressing
Policy, City of Kitchener staff support the recommended roadway name change of New Dundee
Road to Conestoga College Boulevard as proposed by the Region of Waterloo.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
The City of Kitchener has no financial obligations to this issue. All costs to revise street name
signs will be the responsibility of the Region of Waterloo, while any financial arrangements
related to additional costs of a private business address change will be determined between the
affected business(es) and the Region of Waterloo.
CONCLUSION:
It is recommended that City of Kitchener Council support the Region of Waterloo's proposal to
rename a section of New Dundee Road to Conestoga College Boulevard.
