EXEMPTION TO CHAPTER 450 (NOISE) - FOREST
HEIGHTS COLLEGIATE - RELAY FOR LIFE CAMPAIGN
RECOMMENDATION:
That an exemption to Chapter 450 (Noise) of the City of Kitchener Municipal Code be granted to
Forest Heights Collegiate between the hours of 7 P.M. on May 27 to 7 A.M. on May 28, 2005,
for their Relay for Life Campaign being held in conjunction with the Canadian Cancer Society.
BACKGROUND:
Forest Heights Collegiate will be hosting a Relay for Life campaign in conjunction with the
Canadian Cancer Society from the evening of May 27th to the morning of May 28th. The event
will involve a running relay event on the school's outdoor track facility as well as some events
inside the school. There will be some music being played outside from 7P.M. to midnight. As
such, they are requesting an exemption from Chapter 450 (Noise). Attached is a copy of their
exemption request.
REPORT:
The event organizers have indicated that they will take all possible steps to reduce any adverse
impacts that the resulting noise may have. The music played outside will be from a small stereo
and will not involve a loud amplication system.
They have also taken steps to inform the neighbourhood of the event by delivering an
information piece to the residential homes in the area on Sunday April 24th and will redistribute a
reminder notice approximately 2 weeks prior to the event.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
None identified at this time.
COMMUNICATIONS:
No Corporate Communications required.
CONCLUSION:
Based on the circumstances surrounding this event, the By-law Enforcement Division does not
object to this request for an exemption.
