CRPS 05-082
REQUEST OF KITCHENER MENNONITE BRETHREN
YOUTH GROUP TO GIVE AWAY COFFEE ON CIVIC
SQUARE - MAY 14, 2005
RECOMMENDATION:
That the City of Kitchener has no objection to the Kitchener Mennonite Brethren Youth Group
distributing coffee free of charge in front of City Hall on May 14, 2005 to promote International
Fair Trade Day.
BACKGROUND:
Attached is a letter from Michael VandenEnden, Youth Pastor of Kitchener Mennonite Brethren
Church requesting permission to distribute coffee free of charge in front of City Hall, May 14,
2005. In his letter Mr. VandenEnden indicates that the youth of Kitchener Mennonite Brethren
would greatly appreciate the opportunity to spread awareness of Fair Trade out of their concern
for international social justice.
REPORT:
The City's lease with Williams Coffee Pub does not permit competition from anyone providing
the same type of product as Williams offers. Discussion has taken place with Williams Coffee
Pub and they have agreed to the above request provided the coffee is distributed free of charge.
The Legal Division has advised that insurance should be provided but Council could approve
the request otherwise. Facilities Management has expressed concerns with respect to cleanup
after the event therefore, should Council grant the request, staff will be asking for assurances
from the organization that cleanup will take place.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
None
COMMUNICATIONS:
Correspondence was sent to Williams Coffee Pub and followed up with a telephone
conversation with the owner.
