Report No.: DTS 07-012
Subject: HEAVY TRUCK ROUTING - TRUSSLER ROAD
RECOMMENDATION:
That heavy trucks be prohibited at anytime on Trussler Road between Ira Needles
Boulevard and Highland Road.
BACKGROUND:
On November 1, 2006, the jurisdiction of Trussler Road between Ira Needles Boulevard and
Highland Road was transferred from the Region of Waterloo to the City of Kitchener and the
Township of Wilmot, as this section of roadway no longer serves as a part of the Regional road
network due to the construction of Ira Needles Boulevard. At the present time, heavy trucks
are permitted on Trussler Road, as was outlined in the Region of Waterloo Uniform Traffic By-
law No. 06-072.
REPORT:
Trussler Road is a residential roadway between Highland Road and Ira Needles Boulevard, and
this section is no longer a part of the Regional roadway network. It is a rural, two lane cross
section (no curb and gutter}. While Trussler Road was designated as an arterial roadway under
its previous alignment, that designation is no longer representative of the roadway
characteristics.
With the recent opening of Ira Needles Boulevard, heavy truck traffic is no longer necessary or
recommended on this section of Trussler Road, as it should be directed to use Ira Needles
Boulevard. Ira Needles Boulevard has been constructed to handle heavy vehicle traffic.
Additionally, no residential dwellings front onto Ira Needles Boulevard as is the case with
Trussler Road, nor is there a heavy traffic generator that directly fronts Trussler Road between
Ira Needles Boulevard and Highland Road.
On January 5, 2007, a letter was distributed to the residents and/or businesses of Trussler Road
outlining the proposed change to heavy truck routing. While this was not a survey, only an
informational letter, many residents responded with unanimous support for the heavy truck
prohibition. As a result, Transportation Planning is recommending that heavy trucks be
prohibited at anytime along this stretch. The Township of Wilmot has been contacted and is in
agreement with the proposal. Additionally, signs will be erected on Trussler Road that direct
truck traffic to use Ira Needles Boulevard.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
The approximate cost for signage, including installation, is $500 and will be taken from the
existing sign maintenance budget.
