Proulx, Director of Facilities Management Prepared By: L. Proulx, Director of Facilities Management Ward(s) Involved: Date of Report: January 11, 2007 Report No.: CRPS: 07-005 Subject: Consent for Sublet Arrangement re: Waterloo Regional Children's Museum RECOMMENDATION: That the City consents to the sublet arrangement as identified in Report CRPS # 07-005, between the City's tenant, the Waterloo Regional Children's Museum, and the Mad Science Group of a portion of the basement of the Museum premises leased at 10-22 King Street West, provided that the City is not responsible for the costs of any leasehold improvements or modifications required to accommodate the Mad Science Group. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: N/A BACKGROUND: There is a provision in the Lease between the Children's Museum and the City of Kitchener which requires the City's written consent to the sublet of any portion of the premises at 10-22 King Street West, provided the sublet is for a use which is ancillary to and supports the main use as a children's museum. Staff have been approached by the Children's Museum seeking the City's approval of a sublet arrangement between the Children's Museum and the Mad Science Group. The City's consent shall not be unreasonably withheld. REPORT: Two priorities of the Children's Museum [TCM] are sustainable funding and the ability to offer motivating programs and exhibits to the community. This is an opportunity for TCM to further enhance its ability to offer quality programs at a reduced cost. Since its inception the Museum has partnered with organizations to accomplish these goals. January 11, 2007 Page 2 It is proposed that the Mad Science Group will occupy part of the lower basement level which is presently an exhibit space and will also occupy one of the community classrooms. The Mad Science Group will pay TCM a reasonable monthly rent which is currently being negotiated, and will be responsible for their own expenses including telephone, Internet, and fax. Mad Science is a synergic fit with TCM. The free Mad Science programming is something which can be capitalized upon with TCM's marketing and thereby reduce their expenses. Here are some of their statistics to show the growth of Mad Science. 1995 2005 Countries 1 20 Franchise Territories 3 206 Front Line Staff 29 3000+ Schools 855 20,000 Presentations 2,289 200,000 Live Audiences 84,245 4.8 million FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: None. COMMUNICATIONS: N/A CONCLUSION: It is our impression that this partnership is very compatible and it will help the Museum address its ongoing priorities. We seek Council approval to the proposal. L.
