ON-STREET PARKING - ONTARIO STREET NORTH
RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. That on-street parking be prohibited at anytime on the east side of Ontario Street from
Weber Street West to a point 45 metres south thereof, and further;
BACKGROUND:
2. That the Uniform Traffic By-law be amended accordingly.
Transportation Planning has been working with the Waterloo Catholic District School Board
(WCDSB) in reviewing the existing on-street parking regulations on Ontario Street from Weber
Street East to Duke Street.
At the present time, as shown on the attached plan, on-street parking is prohibited at anytime on
the west side of Ontario Street from Weber Street West to Duke Street. Additionally, there is no
stopping anytime on the west of Ontario Street from Weber Street West to Duke Street (8:00
a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday). On the east side of Ontario Street, on-street parking is
permitted for two (2) consecutive hours from 8:00 a.m. to 12 midnight, no re-parking within 5
hours on initial parking., as outlined in the City of Kitchener Uniform Traffic By-law No. 2000-
159.
REPORT:
The Waterloo Regional Catholic School Board (WCDSB) Office will be opening in September,
2005 at the corner of Weber Street East and Ontario Street. During the site plan reviews with
the WCDSB design team, the installation of a lay-by for deliver vehicles was proposed on the
west side of Ontario Street. Transportation Planning staff had some concerns with the
installation of the lay-by as it would compromise safe pedestrian movement along Ontario
Street, this in turn jeopardizing pedestrian safety.
It was requested by Transportation Planning that instead of installing a lay-by on the west side,
that the on-street parking regulations on Ontario Street be changed to allow for the limited
delivery service vehicles to stop on the street and still be able to allow for safe two-way traffic.
To allow for safe two-way traffic it will require the removal of two parking spots on the east side
of Ontario Street, leaving the supply of free two (2) hour parking spaces in the Downtown at
374.
These revisions will allow for the short-term delivers to the WCDSB to be conducted in the
proposed "No Parking" area on the east side of Ontario Street, immediately south of Weber
Street.
Therefore, in the interest of traffic safety, Transportation Planning recommends that on-street
parking be prohibited at anytime on the east side of Ontario Street from Weber Street West to a
point 45 metres south thereof, and that the City of Kitchener Uniform Traffic By-law be amended
accordingly.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
The approximate cost for signing, including installation, for the roadway is $500 and will be
taken from the existing sign maintenance budget.
