HEAVY TRUCK ROUTES - HURON INDUSTRIAL PARK
AREA
RECOMMENDATIONS:
That the following roads be designated as heavy truck routes:
· Huron Road - from Fischer Hallman Road to Strasburg Road (24 hour access)
· Beasley Drive - from Trillium Drive to Homer Watson Boulevard (7am to 7pm daily)
· Trillium Drive - from Huron Road to Bleams Road; and further,
BACKGROUND:
That the Uniform Traffic By-law be amended accordingly.
Upon review of the City of Kitchener's truck routes, it was discovered that there are areas that should be
established and designated as truck routes to provide a serviceable system to the City of Kitchener's
Huron Industrial Park. These streets are generally used by truck traffic although there is no formal truck
route in place for these streets.
REPORT:
The Huron Industrial Park is a fully developed industrial park within the South Ward. Huron Road,
Beasley Drive and Trillium Drive are an integral part of the street network for truck traffic to access the
area, yet, according to By-law 2000-159, these roadways are not designated as heavy truck routes.
These roads are already frequently used by truck traffic requiring access to the Huron Industrial Park.
Furthermore, because there are not adequately designated truck routes within this area, trucks use
routes of their convenience, rather than routes that have been outlined by the City, often using streets
that are not intended to carry truck traffic. In this regard, Transportation Planning recommends that
Huron Road, Beasley Drive and Trillium Drive be designated as heavy truck routes to maintain
consistency and accessibility within the City of Kitchener's truck routing network. These roadways are
designed and are intended to carry truck traffic.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
The cost to appropriately sign these roadways is approximately $500 and will be taken from the existing
sign maintenance budget.
