HomeMy WebLinkAboutCSD-07-018 - Memorandum of Agreement - Earth Day 2007 Report To: Date of Meeting: Submitted By: Community Services Committee February 19, 2007 Prepared By: Mark Hildebrand, Interim Director, Community Programs and Services; Ken Currier, Director, Operations Jo-Ann Hutchison, Facilitator, Volunteer Resources & Community Engagement (x 2227) All Ward(s) Involved: Date of Report: Report No.: Subject: February 1 , 2007 CSD-07-018 MEMORANDUM OF AGREEMENT - EARTH DAY 2007 RECOMMENDATION: That the Mayor and City Clerk be authorized to execute the signing of the attached "Memorandum of Agreement - Earth Day 2007" between Earth Day Canada and the Corporation of the City of Kitchener subject to the satisfaction of the City Solicitor; and, That in subsequent years, the General Manager of the Community Services Department be authorized to execute the signing of the annual Memorandum of Agreement with Earth Day Canada subject to the satisfaction of the City Solicitor. REPORT: For several years, a City of Kitchener staff member has been an accredited Earth Day (ED) Coordinator. ED Coordinators organize, administer and promote environmental projects and events for Earth Day and act as a public contact throughout the year. By having a staff member as an accredited ED Coordinator, the City can then access the many helpful resources and networks that ED Canada makes available and use the ED logo and name. The attached agreement outlines the roles and responsibilities of ED Coordinators and Earth Day, Inc. Details of City of Kitchener 2007 Earth Day activities will be reported at a later date. FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: None. There is no fee to be an accredited Earth Day Coordinator. CONCLUSION: Earth Day is an excellent opportunity for the City to raise awareness of local environmental initiatives and concerns and to encourage residents to take action. I/We, Jo-Ann Hutchison, Corporation of the City of Kitchener hereby accept the position of Accredited Coordinator of Earth Day 2007 events for Kitchener in the province of Ontario. I/We agree with the following: 1) Earth Day is a global event. My/our work as accredited Earth Day Coordinator includes the communication of the spirit and goals of Earth Day to as many Canadians as possible, inviting their participation in the celebration of Earth Day. 2) I/we understand that my/our work as accredited Earth Day Coordinator must reflect the highest ideals of integrity, good will and the promotion of positive solutions to environmental challenges. 3) I/we understand that the global Earth Day movement operates on the basis of non-confrontational and non- political activities designed to educate the public and inspire positive and cooperative participation. I/we agree to abide by the spirit and practice of this policy. 2 4) I/we recognize that Earth Day is an ongoing environmental awareness and action campaign, and that the organization is represented by hundreds of volunteer event and project organizers in hundreds of communities across Canada. I/we recognize and respect our regional and philosophical differences, and understand that we are all working to improve our environment and our common future. I/we, therefore, honour the efforts of other Earth Day organizations and coordinators, and respect the environmental initiatives and efforts of all organizations, whether or not those initiatives reflect the values, issues or concerns of my/our organization, mandate and initiative. 5) As an accredited Earth Day Coordinator, I/we will have access to and make a reasonable effort to promote all national Earth Day programs. I/we understand that I/we may choose to take part in national programs, and agree to abide by the spirit and operations of these programs. 6) As an accredited Earth Day Coordinator, I/we understand that all Earth Day organizations are fundamentally self-funding. Earth Day Canada and other Earth Day organizations may provide fundraising opportunities and assistance upon request. If my/our Earth Day initiatives meet criteria defined by Earth Day Canada, I/we may fundraise as an accredited Earth Day Canada organizer(s). Earth Day Canada will extend corporate Earth Day Canada status for my/our use in these initiatives. 7) As an accredited Earth Day Coordinator, I/we will have use of the Earth Day Canada logo and the trademarked words "Earth Day". It is understood that the logo may be adapted to reflect my/our organization's regional and provincial designation (i.e. Earth Day Kitchener, and this alteration must adhere to the logo's graphic standards.) I/we further understand that the rights to this logo and trademark reside with Earth Day Canada, and that I/we may not sell or grant use of the logo or trademark in any way whatsoever without the written contractual consent of Earth Day Canada. In signing this agreement, I/we understand that this constitutes membership in an organization that will support my/our efforts on behalf of the environment, and will assist the realization of my organization's goals. In return, I/we will fulfill the role of accredited Earth Day Coordinator by maintaining communication with the environmental community in my area of accreditation, assisting in organizing and/or coordinating Earth Day events and initiatives in my/our area, promoting Earth Day Canada programs, maintaining direct communication with Earth Day Canada, and updating the national organization on these Earth Day events and initiatives for the term of this 2007 agreement. If I am unable for any reason to continue in this regard, I will try to the best of my ability to find a person or organization to replace me in fulfilling this mandate.
