HomeMy WebLinkAboutCompass Kitchener - 2007-02-07COMPASS KITCHENER COMMITTEE MINUTES February 7, 2007 CITY OF KITCHENER The Compass Kitchener Committee met on this date, commencing at 4:05 p.m. Present: Mike Harris, Norm Damaren, Don Bourgeois, Jasminka Klacar, Pat Doherty, Sarah Marsh, Theron Kramer Staff: Shelley Adams, Troy Speck, Jenn Walter Regrets: Susan St. John Don Bourgeois welcomed all members, and thanked everyone for attending. Don welcomed, and introduced Troy Speck, here tonight to provide a presentation on Advisory Committees. 1. Advisory Committee Q&A • Troy introduced himself as the General Manager of Corporate Services, indicating that normally he presents this with Carla Ladd, CAO, however she was unavailable to attend tonight. • Troy provided a hand out of the Advisory Committees Terms of Reference for all to review. • Troy outlined Advisory Committee Roles, Responsibilities, and Relationships with the assistance of a PowerPoint presentation. (see attached) ~~ C:\Documents and Setti ngs\jennw\Deskt • The presentation contained important information for new members, and served as a good review for returning members. 2. Review Plan • At Don's suggestion, the committee completed the 5 questions found at the beginning of the Who Are You Kitchener? Citizen's Workbook to determine which population segment each member fit into. • Results: Urban Promoters: Norm, Don, Jasminka, Jenn Community Activators: Pat, Sarah, Theron, Shelley Suburban Stability Seeker: Mike • These results did not come as a surprise - it shows that we need to engage Fringe Dwellers, Small Town Protectors, and Small Town Stalwarts more. • With a PowerPoint presentation, Shelley reviewed the Plan for a Healthy Kitchener, including updates on where we are today. ~~ S:\General\ Corporate Projects\C • It is important to follow up with organizations that are new to the downtown to ensure that they are happy and want to stay! Some people have indicated an aversion to working in the downtown core, it is important to connect these people, and others, with the benefits that can be found here -restaurants, coffee shops, shopping etc. -tie them into the neighbour hood and make them feel welcome and comfortable. • Some Downtown issues should be raised with the Safe and Healthy Advisory Committee, we can partner together to improve. Keeping our mandate in mind -have we missed anything? • Communication and Outreach to Diverse Community including youth • Mayor and Council are looking for pass/fail, not just what the recommendations is that will work for the City of Kitchener It is important discuss with all committees that Compass Kitchener will establish the indicators based on A Plan for a Healthy Kitchener and that they will be beneficial in all 6 priority areas. 3. Prioritization of Work Plan 2007 • This item was not discussed in detail due to time restraints. • Shelley will return to our next meeting with a draft timeline for consideration. 4. Planning for February 24t" Advisory Committee gathering • Shelley inquired as to who was interested in leading the gathering of the Advisory Committees on February 24tH • Don, Mike and Sarah offered, and will meet with Shelley prior to the 24t" to make arrangements 5. Additional Members • Additional members are required in the areas of Youth and Environment. If anyone know of anyone with a background and interest in these areas and who would be interested in joining the committee, please let Shelley know.
