BACKGROUND: On April 3, 2006, Council approved a one time general provision grant in the amount of $5,000 to Junior Achievement of Waterloo Region to assist with expenses related to providing the Economics of Staying in School Program in 2006. REPORT: Junior Achievement of Waterloo Region has submitted another general provision grant request in the amount of $5,000 to assist with costs related to providing the Economics of Staying in School Program to grade 7/8 students in Kitchener schools in 2007. The program is intended to provide students with an understanding of the personal and economic costs of dropping out of school. The expenses for the 2007 Economics of Staying in School program are budgeted as follows: Proiect Investment City of Kitchener Investment Staffing Program Fees and Materials Volunteer Recognition Administration $39,300 $1 0,500 $ 1 ,800 $ 8~400 $60,000 $3,275 $ 875 $ 150 $ 700 $5,000 Total Report No. CSD-07-031 Page 2 The applicant has advised that Junior Achievement also submitted applications to the Cities of Cambridge and Waterloo for funding assistance for this program. The City of Cambridge approved an amount of $1 ,000 and a decision from the City of Waterloo is pending. The City of Kitchener generally provides grants to organizations providing municipal services, primarily recreational, cultural, environmental and community-related activities. Grants for educational purposes are generally not considered. The services provided by Junior Achievement are not a core municipal responsibility and therefore staff recommend that this request not be approved. Further, general provision grants are intended for one time funding only. Junior Achievement received a one time general provision grant for this program in 2006. FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: None.
