DONOR RECOGNITION FOR THE NEW TWIN PAD
RECOMMENDATION:
That the donor recognition opportunities associated with the Hanson Twin Pad "Places
to Play" fundraising campaign be approved as outlined in CSD Report #07-049; and;
That any major facility naming encompassing the entire facility or sports complex be
presented for Council consideration in the future if and when the opportunity arises.
BACKGROUND:
Council approved the construction of the $19.3 million Hanson Twin Pad in January, 2007,
(CSD Report #07-01). Council directed the sport partners (Kitchener Minor Hockey Association
and Waterloo Region Boxing Academy) to commence a capital campaign to generate
$1 ,750,000 (net) and prepare a schedule of donor recognition opportunities based on naming
components of the facility. Council also directed the sport partners to come back to Council in
the future to receive approval for the donor recognition program. Council was presented with
the fundraising plan that is being used as the basis for development of the sport partner
fundraising workplan (attached as Appendix 2). The plan is in alignment with the City's Naming
Opportunities policy, 1-475 (attached as Appendix 3).
REPORT:
This report is seeking Committee support of the Donor Recognition Opportunities Schedule for
the Hanson Twin Pad Sport Partner Fundraising Campaign (attached as Appendix 1). The
schedule is based to some degree on similar capital campaigns and results of the feasibility
study previously undertaken by the Fundraising Consultant. Based on the benchmarks
established in other capital campaigns and the feasibility study, the sport partners "Places to
Play" Fundraising Chair, Peter Benninger has confidence the proposed program reflects
appropriate value levels.
The inventory having a value of $25,000 or more has a total value of $1 ,950,000 which is
consistent with the overall target of the campaign. It is recommended that a gift of this level

have the recognition outlined in the report for the life of the amenity. Major naming opportunities
or rights for the entire complex (or sports campus, if Peter Hallman Ball Yard was to be
included) has not been included in the schedule at this time for three main reasons as follows:
1. The feasibility study undertaken by Campaign Coaches as part of the original business
case did not identify the potential of a major philanthropic donor for the overall complex.
2. Staff feel that any major naming for the entire complex may be on business branding
and/or marketing initiative and as such may be outside of the donation based campaign.
3. Any potential major naming arrangement would likely be significant in scope,
expectations and have a time element. Therefore, staff feel a separate report should be
prepared if an opportunity presented itself.
"Places to Play" Campaign Chair, Peter Benninger will speak as a delegation and will be
prepared to answer questions.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
The scope of the donor recognition opportunities presented in this report is consistent with
campaign budget target of $2,000,000. The Campaign Team will provide donors the option of
making payments over 5 years. However, it should be noted that flexibility may be required in
payment terms, opportunities and/or amounts in order to be creative to respond to the potential
of different situations of the donors. For example, someone making an investment in more than
one naming opportunity may be given consideration for a lower donation listed in the attached
matrix. All payments will be made to the City of Kitchener Twin Pad Fundraising Campaign so
charitable tax receipts can be issued as permitted by legislation.
CONCLUSION:
Approval of the schedule of donor recognition is required so the Sport Partner "Places to Play"
Fundraising Campaign can commence. The timing of approval is important as there is at least
one organization that has asked the campaign team to come forward in June with a proposal.
Since the contribution is likely to be significant, the campaign team would like to discuss the
potential of recognition for their contribution.
No approval is requested at this time related to a major naming rights opportunity for the entire
complex or sport campus.
