ANNE CATHOLIC ELEMENTARY RECOMMENDATION: That St. Anne Catholic Elementary School be awarded one-time community playground grants totalling $1,500 in 2007 toward construction of new primary and junior creative playground facilities to be located within the school campus. BACKGROUND: City of Kitchener Council in 1996 established a program whereby school and community groups may be awarded one-time grants to assist with funding for community playground construction projects. The program offers a maximum $750 one-time grant award for individual school playground projects. REPORT: St. Anne Catholic Elementary School has simultaneously made two applications to the City of Kitchener Community Services Department for one-time grant awards through the Community Playground Grant Program. The school playground projects have the support of the Waterloo Catholic District School Board, the school principal and school council. St. Anne School has engaged in a number of fund raising programs to generate the funding necessary to purchase and construct a variety of new playground features for the school campus, and is now ready to proceed with the installations. The playgrounds will be available for use by the general community during summer 2007. In recent years, the Canadian Standards Association which establishes standards governing playgrounds in Canada has advocated for separate play areas to serve primary grades aged children and junior grades aged children. To assist with construction of these two distinct playground areas at parks and schools, the City of Kitchener has in recent years considered a maximum of two playground grant awards to a single applicant, one grant being awarded to each of the primary and junior playground projects proposed. Report No: CSD-07-051 2 St. Anne School warrants that all aspects of the playground's design, fabrication and installation will be constructed in accordance with current CSA safety standards. City of Kitchener staff is satisfied that the grant application submitted by St. Anne Catholic Elementary School meets the conditions and intent as described within the City of Kitchener's Community Playground Grant Program policy. FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: The one-time grant awards totaling $1 ,500 will be funded by index 674810: Plavaround Grants. COMMUNICATIONS: N/A CONCLUSION: The City of Kitchener Community Playground Grant Program assists school and community groups to raise funds for playground construction projects that benefit school students and the general community.
