BACKGROUND: The City of Kitchener's innovative Artist-In-Residence (A. I. R.) Program celebrated its 11 th year IN 2006-2007 with the appointment of Philip Irish. During his residency, Mr. Irish organized community outreach events including speakers' evenings and sketching/walking tours. He arranged a February 2007 exhibit in the Rotunda Gallery of the work of grade twelve art students from Eastwood Collegiate. The A.I.R. program carries a commissioned art work component. Works of art are acquired by the City for its fine art collection from the artist-in-residence. Over the years, many of the works have been installed in the public areas of City Hall. Mr. Irish created, throughout his residency, a series of paintings based on the stories and paths documented in personal maps contributed by the public. REPORT: In their May meetings, the Public Art Working Group and the Arts and Culture Advisory Committee resolved to recommend the City's acquisition of the painting "Hidden Valley", to be installed in a suitable City-owned location still to be determined. The painting was inspired by Report No. CSD-07-059 Page 2 the environmentally sensitive area known as Hidden Valley. A representation of the painting is attached as Appendix "A". The work is 110 em x 150 em, oil on canvas. A draft agreement to acquire the work will be prepared by Legal Services, subject to Council's approval. FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: The commission is valued at $5,000, to be supported by the Public Art Trust Fund, Account 638045. This account was originally funded by the Lions Club of Kitchener. COMMUNICATIONS: The Artist-in-Residence Program supports the resident artist with marketing services to facilitate direct communication between artist and public, through print, electronic and other appropriate media. CONCLUSION: The City of Kitchener's Artist-in-Residence Program is the only municipal program of its kind in Canada. One of the enduring and tangible benefits of the program is the artist's final commissioned art work which becomes part of the City of Kitchener fine art collection.
