HomeMy WebLinkAboutCSD-07-062 - Willow Green Community Garden ) R Community Services Report To: Date of Meeting: Submitted By: Prepared By: Community Services Committee June 18, 2007 Ken Currier, Director of Operations Ward(s) Involved: Date of Report: Report No.: Subject: Ted Potworka Supervisor, Horticulture 6 May 31 , 2007 CSD-07-062 WILLOW GREEN COMMUNITY GARDEN RECOMMENDATION: That a one-time grant in the amount of $1000.00 be given to the Cherry Park Neighbourhood Association for the startup of the Willow Green Community Garden, which includes: b) Cash grant $500.00 $500.00 a) Services in kind: transport topsoil BACKGROUND: Council Policy 1-400 addresses Community Gardens and recognizes them as a community development activity with far reaching benefits. The policy outlines the conditions for the approval of new gardens and the type of support the City of Kitchener can offer. The policy provides for a contribution normally not to exceed $1 ,000 to assist with the start up of a community garden. Operating funding to cover the costs associated with community gardens was approved in the year 2007 operating budget. REPORT: Attached is a proposal from the Cherry Park Neighbourhood Association for a community garden project to be located at Raddatz Park. The location is a low use lawn area adjacent to Cherry St. Information has been distributed to the neighbourhood and there appears to be ample support for the garden. Staff have met with the gardeners and are also in support of the project. Report No: CSD-07-062 2 The Garden Group will construct, plant, and maintain the garden. Garden Plots are available the general public. Water is readily available from Schneider Creek located directly adjacent to the garden location. The Garden Group has already been successful in obtaining donated resources for the garden and is actively seeking funding to obtain additional resources for the garden. Staff has met with the facilitator of the garden at the site and is in support of the project. FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: The $1 000.00 cost for startup consists of combined services in kind and cash grant. The Community Gardens operating budget for 2007 includes $13,479 which can support approximately 13 new garden initiatives as one-time expenditures.
