Community Playground Grant Application: Alpine Public
School
RECOMMENDATION:
That Alpine Public School be awarded a one-time community playground grant of $750 in
2007 toward construction of a junior creative playground facility to be located within the
school campus.
BACKGROUND:
City of Kitchener Council in 1996 established a program whereby school and community groups
may be awarded one-time grants to assist with funding for community playground construction
projects. The program offers a maximum $750 one-time grant award for individual school
playground projects.
Alpine Public School has made application to the City of Kitchener Community Services
Department for a one-time grant award of $750 through the Community Playground Grant
Program. The school playground project has the support of the Waterloo Region District School
Board, the school principal and school council.
Committee previously awarded a community playground grant of $750 in 1996 to Alpine Public
School. The Canadian Standards Association which establishes standards governing
playgrounds in Canada now advocates for the creation of separate play areas to serve primary
grades aged children and junior grades aged children. To assist with construction of these two
distinct playground areas at parks and schools, Committee has in recent years awarded a
maximum of two $750 playground grants to a single applicant, one grant being awarded to each
of the primary and junior playground projects proposed.
Alpine Public School is engaged in a number of fund raising programs to generate the funding
necessary to purchase and construct a variety of junior level fitness type playground features for
the school campus, and is now ready to proceed with the installations. Once completed, the
playgrounds will be available for use by the general community.
