DOWNTOWN ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES
May 10, 2007 City of Kitchener
The Kitchener Downtown Advisory Committee met this date, commencing at 4:00 p.m.,
Chaired by Glenn Scheels with the following members present: Bernie Nimer, Karen Taylor-
Harrison, Thomas Seebohm, Vince Buehler, Glen Woolner, Chris Farley, Denis Pellerin, Linda
Stewart, Scott Spiedle,
City staff present include: Rod Regier, Silvia Wright, Sandy Curzon, Eric Saunderson
Business Arising

1.1 LRT Update
Mr. Yanik Cyr, Project Director, Rapid Transit Initiative, Region of Waterloo, was in attendance
to provide the Committee with an update on Rapid Transit.
His presentation included the following:

Currently in phase 2 of a 3 phase process
?
Overview of the benefits of rapid transit
?
Need to support the future growth and align routes accordingly
?
Possible decision on the routes and stations as soon as late 2007
?
Environmental Assessment to be complete by Spring 2008
The Committee thanked Mr. Cyr for his presentation.
1.2 Delegation – Ian McLaughlin
Mr. McLaughlin provided the Committee with a presentation and some possible solutions to
the parking issues within the downtown core.
Ms. Silvia Wright, Manager Downtown and Community Development, thanked Mr. McLaughlin
for his presentation.
1.3 Downtown Streetscape Master Plan Update
Mr. Eric Saunderson and GET THE MAN’S NAME provided the Committee with an update on
the Downtown Streetscape Master Plan.
The presentation included:

61% of people who responded to the survey preferred the contemporary design which
includes, sidewalk activity, a people place
They advised that there is a 4 stage process:
1. concept phase
2. feasibility study(June 07)
3. design phase (fall 07)
4. tender phase (Sept – Dec 07)
It was also noted that during the construction of King Street redevelopment, there will be
sensitivity towards the downtown businesses.
1.4 Centre Block Update
The Committee was advised that Andrin Homes will be presenting their proposal to Council at
the regular Council meeting on June 25 at 7:00 p.m.
It was agreed that the June 14 meeting would be cancelled and we would have a joint meeting
with the Economic Development Advisory Committee on June 27 to discuss the Centre Block
proposal.
2. Minute Approval
The minutes of the April 12, 2007 meeting were approved.
On motion, the meeting was adjourned at 5:50 p.m.
