SCI Crematory Agreement
RECOMMENDATION:
That the Mayor and Clerk be authorized to sign an agreement with Service Corporation International
(Canada Ltd.) with respect to the City's provision of cremation services for SCI owned funeral homes
and its clientele subject to the satisfaction of the City Solicitor.
BACKGROUND:
In order to continue to provide crematorium services to SCI owned funeral homes, the company has
asked that the City enter into an agreement to meet the conditions as outlined in their Crematory
Agreement.
REPORT:
City of Kitchener Cemeteries has been providing cremation services to SCI since 1997. This has
been an excellent relationship which has proven beneficial to both parties.
SCI has forwarded an agreement to the City that includes provisions regarding insurance and legal
compliance by the City in its operation of the Williamsburg Crematorium. The City's Legal and Risk
Management Departments have reviewed the agreement and made revisions to the document.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
Williamsburg Crematorium does approximately 550 cremations per year for SCI Properties. Should
this agreement not be signed, the City would be at risk of losing annual revenues of $175,000.
CONCLUSION:
Support of the recommendation will allow staff to continue working with SCI ensuring that the
Crematory Agreement will be signed and the relationship with SCI and the City continues.
