BACKGROUND: The purpose of providing project management training to City staff is to instil a new culture and skill set into the Corporation. A one-day introductory level session, directed at approximately 160 management staff, was completed in the spring and summer of 2007. The goal of the sessions was to achieve consensus of the management team that there is significant value in integrating a project management culture within our Corporation. Based on the comments from the participants, the goal was achieved. The training session was provided by Mr. Paul Bergman, P.Eng. through the University of Waterloo's Continuing Education program. The next step taken identified interested and potential "hands-on" project managers within each city department to provide that group with an intensive 3-day project management training session. Sixty (60) staff have been identified as having the interest and potential. REPORT: To ensure consistency with the previous 1-day training program, a proposal was requested from the University of Waterloo, Continuing Education program. The training proposal (document attached) indicates that the cost of the 3-day training program for 60 staff is $46,210 plus GST. This amounts to $770.16 per person and compares with the $975.00 per person cost normally charged for this program. The training sessions are scheduled to take place in Kitchener in the spring/summer of 2008 with 20 staff in each 3-day session. A comparable 3-day training session is being offered by the Schulich Executive Education Centre /York University in Toronto. The cost for the program is $2195 plus GST per person. In addition to the program cost there would be the cost of travel and overnight accommodation. FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: The training session was budgeted within and will be funded from Index 170056. Finance staff have confirmed there are adequate funds for the program. COMMUNICATIONS: All departments were informed of the training program and were requested to provide the names of interested candidates. Sixty (60) staff throughout the corporation have expressed an interest. CONCLUSION: The development of "in-house" staff with a skill set in project management will help the corporation in achieving its goal of obtaining value for its investments.
