ON-STREET PARKING - LAKESIDE DRIVE
RECOMMENDATIONS:
That on-street parking be prohibited at anytime on the south side of Lakeside Drive from a
point 69 metres east of Broadleaf Place to a point 53 metres east/south thereof; and further,
That the Uniform Traffic By-law be amended accordingly.
BACKGROUND:
Transportation Planning has received a request from a local resident to review the existing on-
street parking regulations on Lakeside Drive around the curve adjacent to municipal address
#211-223 Lakeside Drive.
At the present time, on-street parking is permitted on both sides of Lakeside Drive for three (3)
consecutive hours, as outlined in the City of Kitchener Uniform Traffic By-law No. 2000-159.
REPORT:
Lakeside Drive is classified as a local roadway. Local roadways typically carry less than 2000
vehicles per day and are not generally intended to carry through traffic.
Concerns indicated that when vehicles park along the curve in the roadway adjacent to #211-
223 Lakeside Drive, visibility is restricted, thereby creating potential safety concerns.
Accordingly, a questionnaire was delivered to residents of Lakeside Drive with a proposal to
prohibit parking in the vicinity of the curve adjacent to #211-223 Lakeside Drive. The results are
as follows:
In favour of prohibiting parking on the south side, adjacent to #211-223: 7 (54%)
In favour of leaving the current regulation as is: 6 (46%)
TOTAL 13 (out of 19 - 68% responded)
Given that there was a slight majority in favour of the proposal, and in the interest of traffic
safety, Transportation Planning is recommending that on-street parking be prohibited at anytime
on the south (odd house number) side of Lakeside Drive from a point 69 metres east of Broadleaf
Place to a point 53 metres east/south thereof, as per the attached plan. The prohibition of parking
in this area will result in safer two-way traffic flow and access to/from adjacent driveways.
This recommended revision will result in a loss of approximately four (4) on-street parking
spaces. Transportation Planning does feel, however, that parking usage in this area will still be
accommodated adequately.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
The approximate cost for signing the roadway is $400 including installation, and will be taken
from the existing sign maintenance budget.
