HomeMy WebLinkAboutCompass Kitchener - 2007-09-05 COMPASS KITCHENER COMMITTEE MINUTES September 5, 2007CITY OF KITCHENER The Compass Kitchener Committee met on this date, commencing at 4:05 p.m. Present: Pat Doherty, Theron Kramer, Don Bourgeois, Mike Harris, Kim Knowles, Roxana Stanciu, Norm Damaren, Sarah Marsh, Staff: Shelley Adams, Jenn Walter, Abbie Grafstein, Corina Tasker Regrets: Laura Lee Dam, Susan St. John, Jasminka Klacar Don welcomed all to the meeting, verified that the minutes from the previous meeting were accepted, and started with the first agenda item. 1. Indicators Working Group Update ? Corina spoke for the group, and indicated that all suggestions received have been worked into the document. She noted that it is still a work in progress, indicators may be added or removed year by year. ? The indicators Working Group will be presenting to the Steering Committee for feedback, then taking the document to Corporate Management Team. Following this, the document will be th taken to Council on September 17 during the Strategic Planning Session. ? Members of the Compass Kitchener committee commended this working group for taking on this very large task and working through it diligently. 2. Community Safety and Crime Prevention – An Update ? Shelley reviewed the Community Safety and Crime Prevention update report number CAO-07- 032 to Finance and Corporate Services Committee from August 13, 2007. Please see attached for details. The committee reviewed two draft options for the Plan for a Healthy Community Decision- Making Lens. One draft (referred to as #1) is based on the “Made in Kitchener” Model. This draft includes four questions inquiring “How might this decision reflect the a) values and culture b) social vitality c) environmental viability and d) economic prosperity of Kitchener?” The second draft (referred to as #2) is based on the themes found in the Plan for a Healthy Kitchener. This draft includes seven questions inquiring “Is this decision likely to create greater quality of life in Kitchener?” “Does this decision a)reflect local leadership and the community’s voice b) ensure access, equity and inclusion c)reflect responsible, people-centered development d)ensure the future vitality and success of our downtown e)reflect a balance between sustainable development and the protection of our environment?” and lastly ”All things considered, is the decision balanced in terms of community priorities?” COMPASS KITCHENER COMMITTEE MINUTES September 5, 2007CITY OF KITCHENER - 2 - ? The committee discussed each option carefully, and provided feedback. It was suggested that each question should have a small description paragraph, as this was found to be helpful by members of the committee in the draft examples. ? These drafts will be taken to the Healthy Community Plan – Internal Working Group for discussion on September 11, 2007. ? A question was posed for consideration – Is the final version of this decision making lens sent out to all staff to consider and comment on for each report, or is this a document that is provided to council and have them consider the questions before making a decision? Action: Shelley to come back in October with descriptions for each question. 4. Diversity and Community Engagement Update Abbie introduced herself to the committee and briefly described her position with the corporation as Community and Corporate Planning Associate. ? Development of a Diversity (Access, Equity and Inclusion) Strategy: First step is to look at what we are doing already – Abbie has met with staff to start creating an inventory and received approximately 27 pages of input to filter through. ? Next she is considering what others are doing – corporations of similar size. ? And finally she will be looking at what the obstacles are and working to liaise with people in the community that are working with marginalized and diverse groups within our community. ? Development of a Community Engagement Strategy: A Terms of Reference for Community Engagement will be developed soon; the work will include looking at who is doing community engagement and how, as well as collecting best practices. This information will create a framework for the City of Kitchener to work by. ? A collection of resources is being compiled, and will be available for people to use.
