KITCHENER MEMORIAL AUDITORIUM PUBLIC ART
RECOMMENDATION:
That Council endorse the commission of artwork titled "Gathering Tree" by Ron Baird;
and further,
That the Mayor and City Clerk be authorized to sign an agreement, satisfactory to the
City Solicitor, with Ron Baird regarding the obligations of this commission.
BACKGROUND:
In accordance with Finance 1-650 "Percent for Art Policy", the 2002/3 Kitchener Memorial
Auditorium upgrade was eligible for a public art feature. Our public art processes link artists and
communities, and contribute to both facility and community identity through fair and informed
public competition processes. With the intention to have public artwork installed at the Ottawa
Street forecourt in time for the 2008 Memorial Cup, a one-stage competition was advertised in
Fall 2007. Deadline for submissions was December 10, 2007 and at that time, thirteen
submissions were received.
REPORT:
Selection
The jury, consisting of community representatives, Auditorium staff, Public Art Working Group
representative, two professional visual artists and one City Councillor met on December 12,
2007 and January 9, 2008 to review the submissions, interview, and deliberate. A unanimous
decision was made on January 9 to recommend the proposal put forward by artist Ron Baird,
RCA, AOCA. The jury's recommendation is fully supported by the Public Art Working Group and
Arts and Culture Advisory Committee.

ConceDt
"Gathering Tree" is a site-specific polished stainless steel sculpture in the shape of a tree,
approximately 25 feet in height. The top third of the sculpture features three arms of maple
leaves. The sculpture is "kinetic", that is, it responds to wind with a rotating motion. In addition,
the polished surfaces reflect sunlight and artificial light. Proposed materials and design features
minimize the risk of vandalism and environmental damage.
Mr. Baird describes the "Gathering Tree" as a unique centrepiece for the plaza and the
Memorial Auditorium.
Mr. Baird has created over 150 public artworks during a 40-year international career. His work
has been commissioned by many municipalities including Barrie and North York.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
One percent of the Council-approved construction budget was calculated at $60,000 and held in
capital account 636014. The artwork is funded from this account at $50,000. The remaining
funds will cover installation, administration, contingency and maintenance costs of the project.
COMMUNICATIONS:
The Kitchener Memorial Auditorium public art project is guided by the principles detailed in the
percent for art policy. These principles guarantee a fair and public process. An open call for
proposals was advertised in print and electronic media. Ongoing co-operation of staff from
various departments and the participation of many people from our community on the jury and
advisory committees contribute to the communication standards of the City's public art projects.
A media release will announce Council's approval of the selected winning artist, Ron Baird.
