BACKGROUND: The Memorial Cup is one of the most significant international hockey events held in Canada and only takes place in Ontario once every three years. With an economic impact estimated to be between $8 million and $10 million, this event is a significant boost to both the local economy as well as the profile of the community across the country. The key decision makers with the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) are the Board of Governors. The local host committee in partnership with Peter Martins Restaurant and the City of Kitchener would like to host a welcome reception for the Governors during the first weekend of the Memorial Cup. This function will be attended by the Board of Governors of the CHL as well as league officials. REPORT: The Memorial Cup Host Committee is suggesting a welcome reception as a new part of the Memorial Cup programming. The Host Committee is asking the City of Kitchener to co-sponsor the event in conjunction with Peter Martins Restaurant that would see each of the 3 parties split the cost of hosting this function. The contribution being requested from the City is $3,750. FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: A General Provision Grant would be recommended in the amount of $3,750. Attached is an overall budget for the event. The General Provision Account balance as of March 17, 2008 is $70,549. CSD-08-029 2 CONCLUSION: The support for the welcome reception for the Governors and CHL officials is a great way to introduce these people to the community and say thanks to those associated with this prestigious national event.
