BACKGROUND The City, through a series of land exchanges and dedications with area developers and the Grand River Conservation Authority, successfully secured from development an area of land east of Pioneer Memorial Tower known as the historic ridge, on which one of the founding families in Waterloo County (Betzners) first settled. The preservation of this ridge serves to maintain the visual and physical links between the historic farmsteads of the founding families, the Pioneer Memorial Tower (a National Historic Site} and the Grand River (a Canadian Heritage River). Included in these efforts was the dedication to the City of the former Betzner farmstead barn. The public acquisition of this barn provides the City with a unique opportunity for public interpretation and appreciation along the historic ridge. In accordance with provisions included in the area subdivision agreement, the barn superstructure was removed and the original c.1830s fieldstone foundation was preserved, with a view that it be used in the design of a scenic lookout overlooking the Grand River corridor and form part of the Walter Bean Trail system.
