Christ Lutheran School Community Garden
RECOMMENDATION:
That a one-time grant in the amount of $1000.00 be given to the Christ Lutheran School
Community Group for the startup of the Christ Lutheran School Community Garden,
which includes:
b) Cash grant
$600.00
$400.00
a) Services in kind: transport topsoil and sod stripping
BACKGROUND:
Council Policy 1-400 addresses community gardens and recognizes them as a community
development activity with far reaching benefits. The policy outlines the conditions for the
approval of new gardens and the type of support the City of Kitchener can offer.
The policy provides for a contribution normally not to exceed $1 ,000 to assist with the start up of
a community garden. Operating funding to cover the costs associated with community gardens
was approved in the year 2008 operating budget.
REPORT:
Attached is a proposal from the Christ Lutheran School Community Group representatives on
behalf of the garden participants. The proposed garden is located entirely on the property
owned by Christ Lutheran School at 146 Trafalgar Avenue. This privately owned school property
has confirmed commitment for use of a land parcel on school property to implement the garden
project. As such, no operating agreement is required with the City of Kitchener. The garden will
be available to members of the school and others of the general public. The Garden Group will
construct, plant, and maintain the garden. The Garden Group has already been successful in
obtaining donated items for the garden and is actively seeking funding to obtain additional
resources for the garden. Staff has met with the facilitator of the garden at the site and is in
support of the project.

FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
The $1000.00 cost for startup consists of combined services in kind and cash grant. The
Community Gardens operating budget for 2008 includes $13,766 which can support
approximately 13 new garden initiatives as one-time expenditures.
