Gosse, Director of Legislated Services/City Clerk Prepared By: Patricia Harris, Manager of Licensing Wards}Involved: 4 Date of Report: June 10, 2008 Report No.: CRPS-08-101 Subject: REQUEST FOR COMMUNITY FESTIVAL DESIGNATION - OURLADY OF FATIMA FESTIVAL -AUGUST 30 & 31, 2008 -1548 FISCHER -HALLMAN ROAD RECOMMENDATION: That the City of Kitchener has no objection to a liquor licence being issued to Our Lady of Fatima Festival Committee for an event to be held August 30 & 31, 2008 at 1548 Fischer- Hallman Road, Kitchener, provided a building permit is obtained for the erection of any tents; and further, That the event be declared a "Community Festival" for the purpose of applying for a liquor licence, since this is a traditional Portuguese celebration of their heritage that promotes unity and understanding within our community. BACKGROUND: A Council Resolution is required prior to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission issuing a Liquor Licence for this event. A similar request was approved by Council last year. REPORT: Attached is a letter from Leo Melo and Larry Mendes, Festival Committee Leaders, requesting Council to designate this event as a "Community Festival". They advise that this is a traditional Portuguese religious celebration of their heritage that promotes unity and understanding within their community.
