A two-stage competition, advertised nationally, was held; 23 expressions of interest were received. The jury consisted of the following representatives: a fine arts professional; a Public Art Working Group member; a Downtown Advisory Committee member; a Kitchener Downtown Business Association member; the Consultant working on the redevelopment project; a City landscape architect, and a Ward Councillor. The jury met on March 19, 2008 to create a short list; four semi-finalists were selected. The semi-finalists were asked to prepare detailed proposals. The jury met again on May 29, 2008, but did not make final selection. Further questions were sent to semi-finalist Allan MacKay. The jury interviewed Allan MacKay on July 9 and selected his proposal, with modifications, for Speaker’s Corner. Installation is anticipated for Fall 2009. Background on the artwork, “Relocation and Transformation of Memory” This public art concept touches on the relocation and transformation of the memory of the site known as Speaker’s Corner. Using images based on source photographs of the site as it now looks, an interactive and transformative experience is provided for the viewer. The key sculptural component combines art and mathematics to produce an expression of perspective called anamorphic art. First popularized in the 16th and 17th centuries, anamorphic art creates visual illusions to entrance and delight the viewer. The installation will provide our new “Pedestrian First” downtown with an intriguing and interactive public artwork.
