JANUARY 7, 2003
CITY OF KITCHENER
The Safe and Healthy Community Advisory Committee met this date, commencing at 4:05 p.m.,
Chaired by Ms. S. Adams, with the following members present: Ms. S. Franzen, Ms. A. McConnell
and Messrs. D. Bitovski, P. Doherty and J. Vickery. Councillor B. Vrbanovic Ms. J. Breithaupt, Ms.
M. Dunk and Ms. L. Pendergast were in attendance for part of the meeting.
Others Present: Ms. L. Palubeski, Ms. J. Dean and Ms. L. Korabo.
1. INTRODUCTIONS
Ms. S. Adams, Director of Community Programs and Services, introduced herself and
welcomed members to the meeting. She advised that Councillor B. Vrbanovic, Committee Co-
Chair, had requested that she begin the meeting as he had been delayed in traffic. All
Committee members and staff in attendance then introduced themselves.
Ms. M. Dunk entered the meeting.
2. ORIENTATION
Various staff provided members with background information on: the Committee's role; the
Strategic Work Plan; the role of the Safe City Co-Ordinator; and, the involvement of the
Community Services Department. During the course of these presentations, Ms. J. Breithaupt
entered the meeting.
3. MEMBERSHIP LIST
The Committee Administrator circulated a membership list and requested that any additional or
incorrect information be brought to her attention as soon as possible. A revised list will then be
re-circulated, if necessary.
It was also noted that three individuals appointed to the Safe and Healthy Community Advisory
Committee had resigned for various reasons. It has not yet been determined how these
vacancies will be dealt with and more information will be available at the next meeting.
4. MEETING DATES - PROPOSED 2003 COMMITTEE MEETING DATE SCHEDULE
A proposed meeting schedule for the Safe and Healthy Community Advisory Committee in
2003 was listed on the agenda as follows: February 4; March 18; April 8; May 6; June 10;
August 12; September 9; and, October 7.
By general consent, the dates, as proposed, were accepted. A request was made to include a
November 2003, meeting date, with November 4, 2003 being suggested. The Committee
Administrator advised that Council's general practice has been not to hold Council or
Committee meetings within 2-3 weeks of a Municipal Election.
5. APPOINTMENT - REPRESENTATIVE TO YOUTH OPPORTUNITIES PLAN INITIATIVE
It was noted that City Council had requested that the Safe and Healthy Community Advisory
Committee appoint a member to become involved with the Youth Opportunities Plan (YAP).
Ms. L. Palubeski advised that an information session on YaP had been held on December 4,
2002, and that representatives from a wide variety of community organizations had been in
attendance. The next meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, January 15, 2003, from
4:45 to 6:45 p.m. in the Conestoga Room. Ms. M. Dunk offered to attend this meeting as she
had been in attendance at the December session and agreed to report back to the Committee
at its February meeting. At that time, further discussions could be held regarding formal
appointment of a Committee member.
Councillor B. Vrbanovic entered the meeting.
Councillor B. Vrbanovic extended his regrets for his delayed arrival and thanked the
Committee members in attendance for volunteering to participate on the Safe and Healthy
Community Advisory Committee. He made some personal remarks regarding the history of
the Committee and stated that he looked forward to a productive year in 2003.
