Subject: Community Environmental Improvement Grant -October 2008 Update
The following information is intended to provide members of the Environmental Committee with
an update on the work undertaken by staff to amend the Community Environmental
Improvement Grant (CEIG) for 2008 as well as informing committee members about the 2008
CEIG advertising campaign.
• The CEIG Criteria and the CEIG Application Form have been amended as per Report
CRPS-08-151. The amended grant criteria and application form can be found on the City's
website at htt :// w.kitchener.ca/cei
• The City's web page was amended/updated in coordination with the advertising campaign.
To assist applicants in completing the application form the City's web page was redesigned
so that applicants can easily apply directly online or download an electronic copy of the
application form in either word or pdf format. Applicants can either e-mail or mail the
completed form to the City.
• The 2008 advertising campaign was launched the second week of October. In an attempt to
reach as many people as possible anotice/advertisement was placed in the Kitchener
Record and the Save & Sell. A media release was prepared and distributed to local media.
Also, the City's design team redesigned the CEIG Promotional Brochure. About 150
brochures were printed and distributed directly to targeted neighbourhood groups,
organizations and community groups via mail or a-mail.
• The 2008 CEIG applications are due November 6t". It is anticipated that a package of those
applications submitted will be delivered to each Environmental Committee member early the
following week providing members approximately two weeks to review applications prior to
the November 20th committee meeting where members will decide which applications
receives funding.
• It should be noted that due to the nature of many environmental projects community groups
and organizations often don't begin to contemplate funding sources for projects until such
time that the project is being planned (often early spring) for the upcoming year.
• Staff will be commencing the CEIG advertising campaign much earlier in 2009 so that
community groups will be aware of the grant when planning their projects for the 2009 or
2010 year. Therefore, Environmental Committee members may not begin to see a
significant uptake of the Grant in the next year.
• As the CEIG advertising campaign is brief this year it would be beneficial if Environmental
Committee members could take it upon themselves to forward and application to those
neighbourhood groups, organizations or community groups that they feel may be interested
in the CEIG.
