HomeMy WebLinkAboutEnvironmental Committee - Residential Energy Efficiency Project (REEP) Presentation~sid~n~ti~1 Energy P~c~~ec~ A project of Waterloo Region ~ Solutions PRESENTATION TO THE ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE, CITY OF KITCHENER Prepared August 2008 Prepared by Mary Jane Patterson Executive Director, Waterloo Region m` Solutions Waterloo Region Green Solutions Highlights of 2008 to date Continued strong demand for ecoENERGY program this year: • 468 ecoENERGY initial evaluations in Kitchener already (as of end of July) o represents half of our customers in Waterloo Region o more than we did in Kitchener in all of 2007 (393) • 150 follow-up evaluations in Kitchener Far more than 2007 total of 52 follow-ups, when program was new represents a 32~ rate of follow-up, very healthy return REEP increasing capacity to meet demand • 3 new Certified Energy Advisors hired this year • total of 9 advisors, 2 of which are part-time • successful participation in Job Creation Program, which allowed us to train Cheong Ng, Energy Advisor candidate, on the job Well Aware • we received a quota of 100 free well assessments this year o funded by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment • began the yearwith a waiting list of over 120 people Region-wide REEP House for Sustainable Living • January: hired designer Graham Whiting, established Design Committee • June: hired Campaign Coaches to conduct fundraising feasibility study • July: hired Ball Construction in July as project manager • Next up o hire Educational Coordinator to plan education programs o begin retrofit of Green Office in the fall o mount fundraising campaign in the fall • staff and public consultations ongoing 0 open houses, charrettes, staff and council meeting presentations o would the Environment Committee like to come see the house? local, national and international interest in Net-Zero, LEED certified retrofit o KW Community Foundation ($8,000) o Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation ($ 50,000) o The Kresge Foundation, USA ($ 50,000) o International Energy Agency (case study potential) Organizational Development • Strategic planning session with Board of Directors in April • Mission, Vision and Strategic Goals for next 3 years established • Next up: complete work plan for implementation of Strategic Goals Waterloo Region Green Solutions Proposal for 2009 Requested funding for Waterloo Region Green Solutions: $25,000 Your support is vital to our continued operations, and leverages funding from other cities and utilities, as well as the provincial government, and foundations. REEP Helps the City of Kitchener meet its own goals Air Quality in Kitchener, 2006 Emission Reductions for Communities # 1.22 REEP's energy evaluations (ecoENERGY, Greening Sacred Spaces) encourage homeowners and faith groups to adopt high efficiency heating and cooling equipment. # 1.25, 1.26, 1.27, 1.29, 1.30 The BEEP House for Sustainable Living promotes green retrofits of older homes, and the LEED standard. It will provide learning opportunities and demonstrations of renewable energy, natural yard care, and "clean-air" lifestyles. # 1.32, 1.33, 1.34, 1.35 The BEEP House presents many possibilities for partnerships with the City to achieve and promote goals such as community energy planning, greenhouse gas emissions reductions and anti-idling. Local Air Quality Initiatives #2.1 REEP provides tools and services that empower citizens to use resources sustainably. A Plan for A Healthy Kitchener Page 1 1 Citizens "support increasing density and infill in the central neighbourhoods as a viable response to a growing population".The BEEP House will demonstrate how to make our old houses sustainble in a future of rising energy costs. Page 14 "Our shared vision is for Kitchener to be a community that focuses significant energy and resources on becoming more environmentally friendly...". The BEEP House can be a focal point for the City's public education efforts related to energy and the environment. Waterloo Region Green Solutions Conclusion BEEP continues to grow and serve the community with practical, hands-on tools and services that enable sustainable resource use. Our partnership with the City of Kitchener anchors our work and allows us to respond to the needs we see by developing new initiatives, such as the REEP House for Sustainable Living. We look forward to working with City staff, councilors and residents in 2009 with the shared goal of making Kitchener a "responsible, innovative, healthy and energy efficient community".
