Subject: EXEMPTION TO CHAPTER 450 (NOISE) - CANADIAN
CANCER SOCIETY

That an exemption to Chapter 450 (Noise) of the City of Kitchener Municipal Code be granted to
the Canadian Cancer Society for their annual Relay For Life event to be held at Resurrection
Catholic Secondary School between the hours of 12:00 noon on Friday June 19, and 8:00 AM
on Saturday June 20, 2009.
The Canadian Cancer Society is holding their annual Relay For Life event to raise money for
cancer research on June 19 and 20, 2009, at Resurrection Catholic Secondary School. The
event will run through the overnight hours and will, from time to time involve the use of amplified
music and a loudspeaker. As such, there is the potential for some higher than normal levels of
noise during the event and they have applied for an exemption to Chapter 450 (Noise) of the
City of Kitchener Municipal Code. A copy of their request is attached.

Staff advise that the Cancer Society has ran this annual event at other venues in previous years
and they are not aware of any complaints received.
The Society will be advising the adjacent neighbourhood prior to the event.

Based on the circumstances surrounding this event, the By-law Enforcement Division does not
object to this request for an exemption.
