Divine Performing Arts (DPA) 2009 World Tour will appear at the Centre in the Square,
?
Kitchener on January 6-7, 2009, as part of 20-country world tour.
The show celebrates the excellence and grandeur of classical Chinese dance and music.
?
It is inspired by myths, legends, and 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture.
?
Since the 60’s, communism has eroded Chinese culture. The DPA show aims to revive and
?
express the soul of China to audiences around the world.
In 2008, the non-profit, New York-based Divine Performing Arts group entertained over
?
600,000 live audience members in more than 60 cities on four continents.
In Canada, their tour visited the top theatres across Canada (Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal,
?
Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton).
The DPA's debut in the KW area will add our community to the distinguished list of host
?
cities, enhancing its global identity and prestige.
This grand event will appeal to our area's multicultural community.

50% of tickets are sold.
?
Brochures and a small newspaper are available as promotional items.
?
The DPA group hopes to secure ACAC’s support and assistance promoting and generating
?
attendance for the show.
ACTION: ACAC members to call Wendy Hua (519) 576-7472 to arrange for copies of brochures to
distribute.
ACTION: Staff to forward electronic marketing materials about the DPA to ACAC members to
circulate to their electronic distribution lists.

4.0ACAC Carry-forward project for new term/new committee: Alison Burkett
?
Group reviewed CPII recommendations in light of the progress made in 2008 by the six
implementation focus sub-groups, and identified gaps (listed below) for new ACAC to address
next term:
Group 1: Arts Cluster Development (ACAC members participating: Bill Poole, Jen Breithaupt,
Lawrence McNaught)
?
Future ACAC to consider live/work space allocation opportunities and repurposing/adaptive
reuse of space for the arts
?
Cultural Mapping exercise that the City is undertaking in partnership with the Region and
Cities of Cambridge and Waterloo may assist
Group 2: Community Investment Strategy (Staff and GGA Consultants participating)
?
Phases 1 and 2 of projects complete
?
Community Grants process has been revised
?
Prosperity Council is active (with an arts focus)
?
Future ACAC to continue to monitor
Group 3: Recognition and Promotion
?
Future ACAC to encourage partnership with other city’s arts and culture advisory
committees, and continue to look for ways to support and build on joint efforts and
collaboration

The City’s 2009 ‘Arts Business Creativity Conference’ is one means to this sub group’s end
?
So is ‘spOtlight: Celebrate our artists’ (an initiative of the province of Ontario that will again
take place in Kitchener in 2009).

Promotion of arts and culture scene must be an action item—Regional Tourism Corporation
may be a natural partner as this organization promotes arts and culture in the region as part
of tourism strategy
ACTION: Staff to invite representative of Regional Tourism Corporation to attend a future
ACAC meeting to talk about how ACAC might support Regional Tourism Corporation’s efforts.
Group 4: Intercultural Accessibility (Len Carter)

Group 5: Community and Neighbourhood Arts (Len Carter)

Opportunity to include arts and culture elements in youth and neighbourhood strategies

Leverage work of youth strategy and neighbourhood strategy

City offers one-time community grants in support of community and neighbourhood arts
ACTION: Staff to invite staff member to a future ACAC meeting to provide the committee
with a better understanding of what’s currently going on with the youth and neighbourhood
strategies, and what part arts and culture might play in these initiatives
Group 6: Networking, Data and Research, Media and Marketing (Alison Burkett)

Action must be taken on the marketing background research that has already been
undertaken

INFORMATION ITEMS
5.0Message from Paul Eichhorn:Councillor Kelly Galloway
Paul Eichhorn could not attend today’s ACAC meeting, the last one of the term. He will not
?
be continuing with ACAC next term. He sends his congratulations on what the committee
has accomplished, and his best wishes for future accomplishments.
6.0Council Report: Councillor Kelly Galloway
Public Art Policy approved by Council: “1% for Art” policy (where 1% of total project
?
budget for Capital projects is set aside for art) will be amended so that it the fund will be
pooled, rather than attributed to the particular project generating the funds.
Advisory Committee Appointments: For ACAC, 12 appointments were made. Returning
?
members: Jennifer Breithaupt; Alison Burkett; Len Carter; Councillor Kelly Galloway;
Lawrence McNaught; Julie Robbescheuten, and Jamie Vasey.
Parks Masterplan:
? This current initiative could involve public art. Alison Burkett volunteered
to get involved if an ACAC representative is required.
7.0Joint Advisory Committee Meeting Review: Bill Poole
The joint advisory committee meeting took place on October 28 at the Button Factory in
?
Waterloo.
The arts and culture advisory committees of the Cities of Kitchener (8 attendees, including
?
staff), Waterloo (10 attendees, including staff) and Cambridge (7 attendees, including staff)
participated.
Theme: Achieving cultural success in Waterloo region.
?
Presentation by City of Burlington on its experience with cultural mapping (involves locating,
?
on a map, all areas where arts/cultural activities/initiatives take places, so that physical
relationships can be seen, and planning can address gaps/take advantage of opportunities.
The three cities, plus the Region, and currently undertaking a cultural mapping exercise, so
?
the presentation was timely.
Terry Nicholson from the City of Toronto, the planned speaker, could not attend. He will be
?
invited to speak at a future joint advisory committee meeting.
8.0Members’ Updates
Outcomes of the Advisory Committee review:

Introduction of committee chair, and a vice-chair, rather than co-chairs
o
Orientation session for chair and vice-chair
o
Orientation documents for committee members’ binders
o
Development of an annual work plan is required
o
Review of Terms of Reference is required
o
Supply of information for new advisory committee brief of website is new

Quarterly information sharing staff meetings are new
o
Twice yearly advisory committee meetings for all members also a new initiative
o
Technology in the Arts: event to take place on May 11 and 12, 2009.

A Christmas Carol: playing at the Registry Theatre on Wednesday, December 17.
