REPORT: The Community Services Department has received travel assistance grant applications from Vivian Berkeley and Carrie Speers, each in the amount of $200, to attend the World Bowls Competition for the Blind/Vision Impaired in Melbourne, Australia, from April 18 to May 2, 2009. The costs for two athletes and two coaches to attend this event are estimated at $17,200 as noted in the attached applications. A list of funds raised to date is included with each grant application. The City's travel grants are intended for individuals or groups, age 18 years or under, involved in minor sports in the City of Kitchener who have qualified to compete in provincial, national or international championships. Staff denied the grant requests since the grant applicants do not meet the age criteria. The grant applicants are appealing the staff decision. FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: None.
