HomeMy WebLinkAboutDowntown Advisory 2008-10-09 DOWNTOWN ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES October 9, 2008 City of Kitchener The Downtown Advisory Committee met this date, chaired by Glen Scheels with the following members in attendance: Vince Buhler, Mark Garner, Chris Farley, Glenn Scheels, Glen Woolner, Nadine Cybulski, Karen Taylor-Harrison, Bernie Niemer, Denis Pellerin, Councillor John Smola Staff in attendance: Ken Carmichael, Rob Morgan, Jay Athia, Sandy Curzon, Kim Feere, Silvia Wright, Kara Harrison, Rod Regier Discussion Items 1. Approval of Minutes That the minutes of the June 12, 2008 meeting be approved. Moved by Glen Woolner Seconded by Bernie Nimer 2. Advisory Committee Updates No update on the Economic Development Advisory Committee at this time Safe & Healthy Advisory Committee – looking at proposal for gang activity with other partners and a government ? grant over 3 years – neighbourhood component (5 across the region that are at risk) do work with them to reduce kids recruited into gangs, implement treatment centres/work with agencies goal is to get 60 kids out of gangs – 2.4M budget. parks and street review is being worked on ? 3. New Business 3.1 Parking Study Rob Morgan, Ken Carmichael and Rod Regier provided overview on the parking strategy to the Committee. The following comments / questions were raised: Transit running along King Street again every 5 min might help get people ? out of their cars, the transit system needs to be reviewed is this happening If we could lobby GRT to adjust that might help – the LRT study is o going to help to address that issue. ACTION – GRT to be invited to a future DAC meeting to discuss transit issues along the corridor Have any other things been considered for development – bike lanes, path ? trails etc. Yes the city and region do have staff that are dedicated to that and o through the TDM program will look at that. Where is the TDM standing ? We are almost finished with that and we will be starting up the o program in the next couple of months. How many spots will be at the Benton Street garage? ? 500 o 3.4 Streetscape Mock-up Mark Garner advised of mock up of 3 poles on each side to view the lights in the area will be shut off during this please come out and view on October 30 at dusk.
