Zehr and Members of Council February 23,2009 Randy Gosse, Director of Legislated Services & City Clerk Colin Goodeve, Committee Administrator - ext 2278 All February 18, 2009 CRPS-09-021 APPOINTMENT OF SIMONE SMITH TO THE ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION: That Simone Smith be appointed to the Environmental Committee for a term expiring November 30, 2010. BACKGROUND: On December 8, 2009 Council appointed Mr. Thomas Haygarth, hydro-geologist, to the Environmental Committee as a community-at-Iarge member representing business/industry. On February 2, 2009 staff received Mr. Haygarth's letter of resignation, which indicated that he had accepted a job in Edmonton, Alberta. REPORT: On February 10, 2009 staff was contacted by Ms. Simone Smith who expressed an interest in volunteering with the Environmental Committee. Accordingly, Ms. Smith was requested to fill out an application form, which has been attached to this report. Ms. Smith, M.ASc., P.Eng. is a licensed professional engineer with WESA Inc. and the Kitchener branch office manager. She has an M.ASc. and a B.ASc. in Civil Engineering (Water Resources), both from the University of Waterloo, and a B.Sc. from Queen's University. Her primary roles are to conduct and support risk assessment for WESA offices. She also provides engineering expertise, specializing in site remediation and characterization (soil and ground water) and approvals related to site storm water discharge. Ms. Smith both lives and works in Downtown Kitchener and meets all of the eligibility requirements provided for by Council Policy 1-63 (Appointment to Boards & Committees). At the February 19, 2009 Environmental Committee meeting, the Committee considered Ms. Smith's application and endorsed the recommendation contained herein. It is requested that Ms. Smith be appointed at this time, as the next regularly scheduled meeting of City Council is March 23, 2009. Waiting till that time would preclude her from participating at the March 19, 2009 Environmental Committee meeting. FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: N/A Colin Goodeve Committee Administrator
