MOTION CARRIED DISCUSSION ITEMS 2.0Introductions: All Thanks to ACAC members, new and returning, for volunteering to participate. Committee members bring a wide-range of experience to bear: Kelly Galloway: Serving second term on ACAC. Council Member for two years. ACAC ? membership provides insight and knowledge about arts and culture in Kitchener. Cheryl York: Coordinator, Arts and Culture. The Community Services Department resource ? for ACAC. Carrie Kozlowski: Program Assistant, Arts and Culture. Secretary for ACAC. ? Kathleen Sheehy: Lost and Found Theatre founder. 16 years in Kitchener. Appreciates the ? city’s support for the arts. Juan Bohorquez: Designer; board member, Globe Studios. Wants to participate in activities ? that help the local arts community to grow. Lawrence McNaught: Director of Programming, Registry Theatre. Experience in radio, ? television. Returning ACAC member. Julie Robbescheuten: Archeology background; curator, museum exhibits. Wants to become more involved in the ? local arts community. Jamie Vasey: Background in writing, editing, comedy, broadcasting. Returning ACAC ? member. Alison Burkett: Visual arts background; owner, Gallery on the Grand. Returning ACAC ? member. Peter Hammond: Background in hospitality industry; building, designing and running ? theatres, world-wide. Arts supporter and collector. 3.0 Election of Chair and Vice-Chair for 2009/2010 term D eferred to the next meeting. 4.0Orientation Binder: Cheryl York Binders provided to all members Contents of binder introduced to committee by section. ? Highlights Section 1: Code of Conduct, Appendix A, explains code as applicable to Advisory Committees. ? Role of Advisory Committees like ACAC is to advise Council. ? In 2008, ACAC provided a report about its accomplishments to Council to raise profile of ? committee. ACTION: Staff to inquire with Clerk’s department whether or not any decisions can be made via a vote by email. ACTION: Revised ACAC Terms of Reference to address decisions by email issue. Highlights Section 2: All Advisory Committees (including ACAC) must review their Terms of Reference (TOR). ? Staff suggestion to accomplish this in first half of 2009. ? ACAC representative to serve on Downtown Advisory Committee (DAC) ? ACTION: ACAC members to consider sitting on Downtown Advisory Committee, as one volunteer is required to regularly attend DAC meetings and report to ACAC on DAC accomplishments. ACTION: Staff to advise ACAC members, by email, of DAC meeting schedule and request a volunteer to sit on DAC meetings. ACTION: Staff to include Public Art Working Group (PAWG) Sub Committee reporting on next meeting agenda. ACTION: Staff to advise ACAC members, by email, of PAWG meeting schedule and request a volunteer to sit on PAWG meetings. Highlights Section 3: Sample Work Plan ? ACTION: Staff to include drafting of committee Work Plan on next agenda. 2 January 2009 - ACAC Minutes ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ACAC) MINUTES Tuesday, January 20, 2009 CITY OF KITCHENER Highlights Section 4: This section to contain meeting agendas, minutes and Council Reports ACTION: Staff to send, electronically, Kitchener Public Art policy and program review consultant report to ACAC members. Highlights Section 5: CulturePlan II Update shows progress to date on recommendations made in the original ? CulturePlan II document. Highlights Section 6: In 2009, ACAC will provide advice during the development of a Public Art Masterplan, ? Collection Management Guidelines and Public Art Maintenance Guidelines. A photo of The Luggage Project, a public art installation in Victoria Park, was included in ? a publication by Municipal World entitled, “Cultural Planning for Creative Communities”. Only 9 photos of 71 submitted were selected for this publication. ACTION: Staff to send electronically the public art report to ACAC members. 5.0ACAC carry-forward project for new term/new committee: Alison Burkett The committee discussed work to date implementing the recommendations made in CulturePlan II. Recommendations had been grouped into seven areas; teams had been created to oversee ? the implementation of the associated recommendations. The committee discussed whether or not the recommendations are still current (made in ? 2004), and how to address new suggestions and ideas. The TOR review is one place where new ideas can be considered. ? New ideas may be recorded in a ‘parking lot’ document. ? We should be aware of grass-roots initiatives in the arts community—there are many ? examples of alternative visual arts, performance, and music which are outside of the ‘mainstream’. ACTION: Staff to ungroup the recommendations and indicate which ones have been accomplished. ACTION: Registration process for Feb. 5, 2009 Arts Town Hall to include an opportunity to indicate interest in participating on ad hoc committees. 6.0Town Hall on ACAC’s achievements for Thursday, February 5, 2009, 7pm Committee discussed the program for this event, which features the visual arts, music, ? drama, and dancing. ACAC members, past and present, will be introduced. ACTION: ACAC members to RSVP to Carrie Kozlowski by email, and to indicate if able to help as greeters. ACTION: Staff to advertize Town Hall in Community Centres and in the Downtown E-News (KDBA electronic publication), and to send to Kitchener Youth Action Council. 3 January 2009 - ACAC Minutes ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ACAC) MINUTES Tuesday, January 20, 2009 CITY OF KITCHENER INFORMATION ITEMS 7.0Council Report: Councillor Kelly Galloway Budget passed with a 3.98% tax increase. Capital projects create jobs and stimulate the economy, so they were not cut from the budget. Federal Government may assist by providing matching funds to municipalities with ongoing ? capital projects in place. 8.0Members’ Updates Geo-caching at the Children’s Museum: Sept 09 – Jan 10—Geo-caching is high-tech treasure ? hunting. The Children’s museum event will be the first time this event is hosted in Canada. Button Factory: see their web site for (www.buttonfactoryarts.ca) for information on ? sessions pertaining to the effect of the economic downturn on arts organizations. Registry Theatre: the winter/spring 2009 schedule is now available ? (www.registrytheatre.com). Globe Studios: introduced a series of monthly events called “Third Thursdays” (6-10 pm). ? Purpose is to provide an opportunity for the community and artists to get together, and to promote the arts. Features talks, demonstrations, shows, and exhibitions (http://nexi.com/globe) King Street Theatre: Theatre is closing. Arts organizations are brainstorming on how to ? keep the centre operating. Upcoming city-sponsored networking/artist education event: ABC (Arts, Business, ? nd Creativity) 2 annual one-day workshop for artists April 25, 2009. Theme: Marketing and Audience Development. Two streams of content for individuals and for organizations. Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge working together with Small Business Centres. spOtlight information session: Artists and arts organizations are invited to attend ? information sessions about participating in the 2009 edition of spOtlight: Celebrate Our Artists weekend, Friday June 5 to Sunday June 7, 2009. spOtlight: is a weekend festival of free arts activities for the public, including behind the scenes tours, workshops, art talks or demonstrations. Upcoming Information Sessions for spOtlight: Friday, January 23, 2009 1 p.m. – 3 p.m., Globe Studios, 141 Whitney Place, Kitchener, ON spOtlight: is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Culture and produced by the Ontario Arts Council. Kitchener Waterloo Art Gallery: new exhibit, Anthem: Perspectives on Home and Native ? Land. January 15 to March 22, 2009.
