Box 1118 Technical Services Kitchener, ON N2G 4G7 Date: March 25, 2009 To: Heritage Kitchener Committee Members From: Michelle Wade, Heritage Planner cc: Subject: Potential Heritage Permit Application 70 King Street East Projecting Sign on King Street Elevation 70 King Street East is designated under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act. On October 7, 2008, Heritage Kitchener recommended approval of HPA-2008-OIV-018 for the installation of projecting signs in accordance with the plans submitted with the application. The plans included a projecting sign on both the Frederick Street elevation as well as the King Street elevation. Heritage Kitchener was also informed that the proposal required a variance from the City's Sign By-law. Through the circulation of the variance it was determined that Frederick Street is a Regional road and that the Region does not permit encroachments into their road right-of-way. As a result, a projecting sign may not be installed on the Frederick Street elevation. A Sign Permit Application has been submitted for a projecting sign on the King Street elevation; however, the location of the projecting sign is not consistent with the plans submitted with the application. The Heritage Permit Application noted that the projecting sign would be located above the single entrance on the left side of the fagade while the Sign Permit Application notes that the projecting sign will be located above the double entrance between the fins and the edge of the building (at the corner of King and Frederick Street). Heritage Planning staff have advised the applicant that a Heritage Permit Application is required to address the proposed new location of the projecting sign on the King Street elevation. Heritage Planning staff anticipate that a Heritage Permit Application will be submitted shortly and will try to review the merits of the application and provide a recommendation for consideration at the April 7t" Heritage Kitchener Committee meeting. _ j~~~-,-.~ , Ctl IA:Y 'TAP.
