Gosse, Director of Legislated Services/City Clerk PREPARED BY: Patricia Harris, Manager of Licensing WARD(S) INVOLVED: 4 DATE OF REPORT: April 6, 2009 REPORT NO.: CRPS-09-040 SUBJECT: REQUEST FOR COMMUNITY FESTIVAL DESIGNATION - OUR LADY OF FATIMA FESTIVAL - SEPTEMBER 5 & 6 - 1548 FISCHER HALLMAN RD. RECOMMENDATION: That the City of Kitchener has no objection to a liquor licence being issued to Our Lady of Fatima Festival Committee for an event to be held September 5 & 6, 2009 at 1548 Fischer- Hallman Road, Kitchener, provided a building permit is obtained for the erection of any tents; and further, That the event be declared a “Community Festival” for the purpose of applying for a liquor licence, since this is a traditional Portuguese celebration of their heritage that promotes unity and understanding within our community. BACKGROUND: A Council Resolution is required prior to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission issuing a Liquor Licence for this event. A similar request was approved by Council last year. REPORT: Attached is a letter from Leonardo Melo, Festival Committee Leader, requesting Council to designate this event as a “Community Festival”. They advise that this is a traditional Portuguese religious celebration of their heritage that promotes unity and understanding within their community.
