REPORT T0: Development & Technical Services Committee
DATE OF MEETING: June 22, 2009
SUBMITTED BY: John McBride, Director of Transportation Planning
PREPARED BY: Jeramie Lewis, Traffic Technologist
WARD(S) INVOLVED: Ward 6
DATE OF REPORT: May 29, 2009
REPORT NO.: DTS-09-091
SUBJECT: NYBERG STREET - ON-STREET PARKING
RECOMMENDATIONS:
That the on-street parking regulations on Nyberg Street be changed to allow parking on the
north side from Ottawa Street South to Borden Avenue for a maximum of two (2)
consecutive hours ;and further,
That the Uniform Traffic By-law be amended accordingly.
BACKGROUND:
Transportation Planning has received a request to review the existing on-street parking
regulations on Nyberg Street between Ottawa Street and Borden Avenue. The request cited
concerns about vehicles parking along the north side for extended periods of time. Concerns
were also cited related to safe two-way traffic on the roadway.
REPORT:
At the present time, on-street parking is permitted on the north side of Nyberg Street from Ottawa
Street to a point 85 metres west thereof for a maximum period of three (3) consecutive hours, as
outlined in the City of Kitchener Uniform Traffic By-law No. 2007-138.
Staff met on site with the two affected businesses to discuss the issues. The current regulations
on Nyberg Street were originally implemented to accommodate delivery trucks for the businesses
fronting Nyberg Street. However, since that time, and through these discussions with the
businesses, delivery truck access can be accommodated with parking being permitted on the
north side of Nyberg Street.
Based on these discussions, and a review of the roadway, Transportation Planning is proposing to
permit on-street parking at anytime on the north side of Nyberg Street from Ottawa Street to
Borden Avenue, for a period of a maximum of two (2) hours, as per the attached plan. This will
3-1
allow for a reduction in the amount of extended long term parking. This proposed parking would
result in the gain of approximately fifteen (15) available on-street parking spaces
COMMUNICATIONS:
This proposed parking regulation revision is supported by both affected businesses in this area
-124 Ottawa Street South and 405-409 Nyberg Street. A copy of the report has been provided
to both businesses.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
The approximate cost for signing including installation is $500 and will be taken from the
existing sign maintenance budget.
