Provided an update on WRAC’s status and involvement on CulturePlanII (CPII) media
recommendations # 39 to 42
Prosperity Council is considering the establishment of a region-wide arts promotion body,

which may be a revised WRAC or another body entirely
Region, City, WRAC discussing how to improve the Arts Portal; new features to be added;
?
cultural directory may be available in print on demand only, otherwise on-line
#39: Inventory of media and arts writers: may consist of ongoing updates to successful

WRAC Directory
Group considered possibilities at a high level only

Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge could collaborate?

Could include names, hints, tips?

Could evolve from existing arts portal?

The City’s Communications and Community Services departments are working on a

regular dialogue towards access, representation, and better understanding
On a motion made by Kathleen Sheehy, seconded by Julie Robbescheuten:
“That the Arts and Culture Advisory Committee (ACAC) strike a subcommittee to
develop a summit in mid to late August, where arts and media leaders explore how
to facilitate access and representation (CPII recommendation #41). WRAC to be first
partner.”

Culture Advisory Committees to join the subcommittee on the arts/media leaders summit
#42: Mainstream arts report on local radio and TV; and advocating more space on local

Group discussed in general terms only the possibility of arts organizations and the

4.0Delegation: Waterloo Regional Tourism Marketing Corporation (WRTMC): Susan Cudahy
Provided background on WRTMC activities and current and planned events brochures and
calendars
Corporation exists to eliminate duplication of efforts, silos, and to streamline efforts, access

government funds, take advantage of increased economies of scale and purchasing power,
show a fuller range of activities
14 board members; Don Bourgeois is Arts and Culture representative

Mission: to increase tourism in Region; promote our region world-wide
?
“Tourism” includes increasing gate attendance, audience development, general attendance,

leisure travel, corporate travel, overnight stays
Funded jointly by the Cities of Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, the Region and the four

townships
“Staycation” is 2009 focus; driven by current economy; addressing a local audience, which is
?
a step away from WRTMC’s usual mandate
Staycation has an arts and culture focus; arts and culture resource web site in development
?
WRTMC’s biggest marketing tool is its website: www.explorewaterlooregion.ca; includes a
?
full listing of events, both big and small (big accomplishment)
Hardcopy “Destination travel guide with full events guide” another marketing piece
?
Wants open and constant communication with arts community
?
Seeks sustainable audience development efforts; feedback on its initiatives; new ideas;
?
wants to encourage new arts involvement
Has an inventory of arts and culture assets in the region from an Arts and Culture

perspective

On a motion made by Jamie Vasey, seconded by Julie Robbescheuten:
“That the Arts and Culture Advisory Committee (ACAC) endorse the jury’s selection
of Ted Fullerton’s proposal, “Pedestrian” for the Charles and Benton Parking Garage
Public Art competition.

Jury selected Ted Fullerton’s “Pedestrian” for Charles/Benton Garage public art

On June 10, five semi-finalists presented their proposals.

downtown context and the building. This piece will engage the public’s imagination and
provide an opportunity for interaction at street level.

11.0ACAC/PAWG/DAC Digital Media Meeting Report: Cheryl York
Consultation took place on June 9, 2009

Goals of the project: attract people to the downtown, and raise awareness of tourist

opportunities
Focus of the project over next 3-6 months: promotion of city-supported events/festivals;
?
display of digital media public art work; development of a selection committee for digital
media artwork; proposals by digital media artists; determine if audio component would make
sense; get feedback and fine-tune program
Advertising is not a focus; but acknowledgement of sponsors is fine

Industrial Artifact celebration of the new Canada Cordage acquisition at the original site of
