Veterans’ Green Project Update
Veterans Green
Veterans’ Green is a small
parcel of land in the St. Mary’s
Heritage Conservation District
at the intersection of Spadina
Road East and Glen Road.
As the St. Mary’s Heritage
Conservation District was
established to highlight and
conserve the post World War II
wartime housing effort and
character, it seemed fitting that
a site within this district would
be the appropriate location to
commemorate our veterans
and also serve as the location
of the St. Mary’s Heritage
Conservation District
Veterans’ Green location
interpretive area.
Project Update
e the intent of Heritage Planning Staff to design this site with a program including:
It is therefor
a monument to commemorate our veterans;
interpretive signage to explain the significance of the St. Mary’s Heritage Conservation
District and also highlight the significance of the veterans within this HCD and within the
City of Kitchener; and
park benches and plantings to enhance the aforementioned features while providing the
opportunity for respite and quiet contemplation.
ê ó
Heritage Planning Staff is currently gathering background information and photographs for the
interpretive signage; sourcing options and suppliers for a monument, interpretive signage and
site furnishings; working on a design that incorporates these elements; and, working to
coordinate and schedule contractors and/or City crews to construct the project.
th
It is too soon yet to tell whetherfull construction of this project is feasible before November 11
of this year, as the production of theinterpretive signage and the monument will require a
number of weeks and the coordination of contractors and City crews to construct and install the
features will be a challenge within the short timeframe. In the event that this cannot occur, a
number of scenarios could take place. Remembrance Day could serve as an opportunity to
unveil the final plans with construction to occur next spring, or the project could be phased, with
construction taking place prior to Remembrance Day and the monument and interpretive
signage being installed as they are available or prior to Remembrance Day of 2010. Heritage
th
Planning Staff will continue to work toward the November 11 deadline for project completion.
