DISCUSSION ITEMS
5.0Community Mapping Project Update: Ingrid Pregel
Proof of concept is complete. The hand out is the project briefing summarizing this work. A
?
pilot project is being established and work plan for 2010 will be developed this fall.
Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge are partners, townships being kept informed.
?
At this stage information is for municipalities only; must be useful for policy/planning
?
purposes.
Mapping project not intended to be a public source of information about arts organizations
?
or events, although at some point in the future this might be done.
The Region will be responsible for hosting the database and creating maps which will reside
?
on the websites of all the partners.
Only information that can be updated will be included so that the project is sustainable.
?
“Places and Spaces” is starting point for the Pilot in 2010; will assist in identifying gaps.
?
Municipalities are most interested in two levels of data (Level 1 core data, and some
?
portions of level 2 e.g. number of seats per venue); WRTMC (Waterloo Regional Tourism
Marketing Corporation) most interested in higher levels of data (festivals and events). For
now the WRTMC will be the source of information about festivals and events for the general
public.
While mapping project is not at a stage to address goal of audience development, other
?
initiatives are:
Waterloo Region Tourism Marketing Corporation (WRTMC)’s Staycation program,
o
supported in part by City of Kitchener’s Culture Plan II funds. This initiative ran from
May until October and included newspaper, radio spots and TV adverts.
“Engage Ontario”, a proposal for three municipalities to work together to encourage
o
audience development and involve local people in programming (more information to
follow via email).
Waterloo Region Arts Council (WRAC) Arts Portal is a source for some of the information on
?
the maps.
6.0Subcommittee on Arts/Media Leaders Summit Update
Group shared ideas electronically and developed a checklist.
?
Need to meet as a group and report back.
?
ACTION: Subcommittee to meet as a group and report at October meeting.
ACTION: Staff to share information from subcommittee with ACAC electronically and add
item to next agenda.

INFORMATION ITEMS
7.0Council Report: Councillor Kelly Galloway
?
ACAC Workplan and ACAC & PAWG Terms of Reference
Approved by Community Services Committee, next step is for Council consideration and
o
approval.
Budget deficit due to effects of economy (building permits down, revenues down, Economic
?
Development Investment Fund coming to a close, costly snow removal season last year, and
spending required to be eligible for stimulus funding from federal government) will result in
a 3% tax increase, and likely service cuts.
Staff is proposing an end to the curbside leaf collection program, and a reduction in number
?
of leaf drop off sites.
King Street TV has been launched (digital projection onto the cube on top of City Hall).
?
Regional Police Headquarters unveiled a new piece of public artwork, “Child Found”.
?
The King St. streetscaping project is behind schedule; this results in a delay of the
?
installation of Allan MacKay’s public art work at Speaker’s Corner, “Transformation and
Relocation of Memory).
8.0Public Art Working Group Report (PAWG): Alison Burkett
?
PAWG terms of reference distributed.
?
Highlights include:
10 members at any one time, includes one ACAC rep
o
New definition of responsibilities
o
?
Belmont Ave. Public Art:
Late-breaking public art opportunity
o
1.2 M construction budget; 1% of that for Public Art, may be topped up from Public
o
Art funds
Call for proposals coming; first need to work out final landscape plan and parking
o
issues to determine location
?
Country Hills Community Library Public Art:
On a motion made by Alison Burkett, seconded by Betsy Petker:
“That approval be given for the commission and installation of artwork titled “In
Time” by Jefferson Campbell-Cooper at the Country Hills Community Library.”
Discussion:
“Imagine, Learn, Discover” (activities that occur in the library) and natural areas
o
beyond the library were identified for the applicants’ thematic consideration.
Six submissions were received in response to the call for entry.
o
Jury unanimously selected Jefferson Campbell-Cooper’s “In Time”.
o
Proposal includes six 4’ x 8’ painted panels depicting images of the region’s most
o
important geological ages and their transformation of the landscape outside of the
library.
Additional feature is “geologic clock” to be mounted next to the library’s current clock.
o
An informative panel will also be installed to provide more details about the subject
matter of the mural panels.
Jurors liked that the complex images engage a range of age groups, and were
o
impressed with the imaginative concept, the work’s uniqueness, the artist’s experience
in completing art works on similar sized panels, its colourful nature, and its educational
components combining science and art. The work is durable and low-maintenance.
Does this item require consideration by the library board?
