ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ACAC) MINUTES
Tuesday, October 20, 2009 CITY OF KITCHENER
Committee discussed talent attraction overlap with activities of Prosperity Council (PC) and
?
KW Community Foundation. Other groups also recognize importance of Arts and Culture as a
talent attractor.
5.0Youth Arts Strategy: What is it? Does Kitchener need one?
Youth Art Network (CPII recommendation #26)
Supplemental Art in School System (CPII recommendation #29)
Arts focused youth groups/high school groups often operate in isolation; those interested in
?
the arts don’t come together as a larger community.
Does concentration of arts focused students at Eastwood rob other schools of students who
?
could be arts champions?
Limited funding dictates what connections are possible across school boundaries
?
Often music has more emphasis than visual arts in schools
?
Definitions of “youth”: City’s special events dep’t defines youth as 16-35. Challenge: needs
?
are very different at opposite ends of this age spectrum; and at older age of spectrum,
needs very different between youth pursuing post secondary education and those not in
school.
Communicating with youth: Social networking? Need to work in existing social networks to
?
ride momentum and have credibility? Or use more traditional means? School board is
bureaucracy; difficult to communicate with it and through it.
ACTION: Staff to find best way to meet with KYAC members to continue the discussion/
exploration of issues
6.0Examine if Arts Week (CPII recommendation #55) remains a priority for City, given Ontario
Arts Council’s spotlight weekend and other local major arts festivals: Don Chapman
Don Chapman distributed listing of events supported by the City.
?
No need for new programming such as an Artsweek. Better to build on momentum of
?
existing events; identify gaps (marketing).
Issue is not about lack of events, but rather advertising and promoting events
?
Special Events dep’t will consider the marketing of its events in 2010. How to use social
?
networking to best advantage? How to encourage collaborative marketing? Are
tangible/physical marketing tools useful (banners, digital media boards)?
Special Events would like to explore how best to reach youth audiences for its programs
?
‘Community Arts Marketing Plan’ is required; but who will put it together? City currently has
?
no budget for new strategies/initiatives. Perhaps Prosperity Council’s Enabling Organization
will address?
Group discussed Waterloo Region Tourism Marketing Corporation (WRTMC) and its efforts;
?
tourism marketing reaches a different audience, need promotion to local audiences.
Group considered the Waterloo Regional Arts Council (WRAC)’s Arts Portal and Cultural
?
Mapping Project as potential tools useful for ‘Community Arts Marketing Plan’
Group felt strongly that synergy exists between Cultural Mapping Project and Community
?
Arts Marketing Plan
ACTION: Staff to find out status of WRAC’s Arts Portal Update
ACTION: Staff to explore if Cultural Mapping Project could be a tool for a ‘Community Arts
Marketing Strategy’ and find out status of project.

o
Two artists’ proposals were of equal merit.
o
th
As the City celebrates its 100 birthday in 2012, Puckett’s residency in 2011 will be a
