REPORT T0: Development & Technical Services Committee
DATE OF MEETING: November 16, 2009
SUBMITTED BY: John McBride, Director of Transportation Planning
PREPARED BY: Jeramie Lewis, Traffic Technologist
WARD(S) INVOLVED: Ward 6
DATE OF REPORT: October 27, 2009
REPORT NO.: DTS-09-163
SUBJECT: RIGHT TURN ONLY LANE BELMONTAVENUEAT
GLASGOW STREET -BUS EXEMPTION
RECOMMENDATION:
That the westbound "right turn lane only" regulation on Belmont Avenue at Glasgow Street
be exempted to transit vehicles; and further,
That the Uniform Traffic By-law be amended accordingly.
BACKGROUND:
Transportation Planning previously submitted a report "DTS-09-063 Belmont Avenue West
(Belmont Village) - On-street Parking and Right Turn Lane Designation at Belmont Avenue and
Glasgow Street", approved by Council on June 15, 2009. This approval resulted in the
implementation of a "Right Turn Only" lane on westbound Belmont Avenue at Glasgow Street.
REPORT:
Since this exclusive right turn lane has become operational, it has been discovered that the
existing near side transit stop on Belmont Avenue at Glasgow Street forces transit vehicles to
negotiate a through movement from this "Right Turn Only" lane in order to continue westbound
on Belmont Avenue. It is not practical to relocate the transit stop as its current location
maintains safe traffic operations along with ideal service for all transit users. Therefore, in an
effort to maintain safe and efficient traffic movements through this intersection along with the
appropriate transit service, it is recommended that transit vehicles be exempted from the posted
regulation designating right turns only.

FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
The approximate cost for signing including installation is $200 and will be taken from the
existing sign maintenance budget.
