CYCLING ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES
NOVEMBER 10, 2009 CITY OF KITCHENER
The Cycling Advisory Committee met on his date commencing at 4:08 p.m.
Present: B. Forwell (Vice-Chair), Councillor J. Gazzola and Messrs. S. Burek,
D. Class, D. Hilker, B. Laube, N. Mehés and Ms. P. Ji-Taylor
Staff: Messrs. R. Schirm (Committee Administrator), P. Wetherup and Ms. K. Reinert

CYCLING MASTER PLAN

Ms. Norma Moores, and Ms. Neluka Leanage, both from the consulting firm, IBI Group,
attended the meeting to make a presentation of the Cycling Master Plan Project to the Cycling
Advisory Committee.
Ms. Moores gave an overview of the topics, issues, and mapping that will be presented at
st
upcoming Public Open Houses. The Open Houses will be held on November 21 from 10:30
a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Kitchener Market, and from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Activa
Sportsplex. Everyone is invited to attend and request was made to pass the information on to
others who may be interested.
Action: Mr. Ron Schirm to email the Open House information to committee members
.
Mr. Schirm mentioned that the survey, which was done in June, has been expanded to include
a few more specific questions and will be made available at the open houses.
Ms. Moores proceeded with the PowerPoint presentation of types cycling facilities and their
applications throughout North America and Europe (presentation included below). Committee
members were asked to consider the criteria that the League of American Bicyclists uses to
designated bicycle-friendly communities (see attached) and select what they think are their top
five priorities for the City of Kitchener. This information will be discussed at a subsequent
meeting.

The committee separated into two groups with Ms. Moores and Ms. Leanage facilitating each
group. Committee members marked their ideas for improvements on maps, as shown in
Exhibit 4 to Exhibit 6A .
Action: Ms. Norma Moores will report back to the committee with concrete ideas and
draft recommendations in the new year.

Minutes of the October 13, 2009 meeting were not available at this time but will be provided by
Ms. Moores prior to the next meeting.

Motion to accept draft letter prepared by Mr. Tim Kenyon and forward to Council along with a
report outlining what the issue is.
Motioned by Mr. D. Hilker
Seconded by Mr. D. Class
Councillor J. Gazzola recommended that the draft report be sent to this committee for input.
JUNE 4 SURVEY

Mr. Ron Schirm requested that this item be deferred to the next meeting because of the
impending open houses and the speculation that there will be a lot of response.
Mr. Duncan Class requested that the mini reports he forwarded to committee last month be
reviewed prior to the end of the year but noted that there is no meeting scheduled in
December. Although advisory committees are not scheduled to meet in December, dis-
cussion took place on whether it would be feasible for this committee to meet.
Action: Mr. Schirm to check if room is available and send an email to committee
members to inform them of availability and, if required, a response as to whether
members are available to attend or not.
