COMPASS KITCHENER COMMITTEE MINUTES
January 6, 2010 CITY OF KITCHENER
The Compass Kitchener Committee met on this date, commencing at 4:35 p.m.
Present: Theron Kramer, Kim Knowles, Sarah Marsh, Norm Damaren, Laura Lee Dam, Corinne
Cash, Corey Badcock,
Staff: Shelley Adams, Jenn Grein, Susan Weare
Regrets: Julia Browne, Jasminka Klacar
Theron welcomed all members to the meeting. Shelley introduced Susan Weare, a MSW student at
WLU who will be working with the committee for the next 6 months.
1. Review of December Minutes

2. Who Are You, Kitchener? 2 (WAYK2)
?
Prior to discussing WAYK2, Shelley updated the committee, the presentation of results from
th
the Environics Survey will be Monday, January 11 in Council Chambers at Finance and
Corporate Services Committee. All Compass Kitchener members are welcome and
encouraged to attend. The committee was provided with a copy of the presentation. Shelley
noted the information on happiness and a scattergram of the results will also be provided
during the presentation, but were not available today.

Jana Miller from Communications and Marketing has been working with Shelley on WAYK2
with a goal to engage more people in a more personal way.
?
Shelley provided the committee with a draft Citizen Engagement Brief for WAYK2. Together,
the group reviewed and provided comments and suggestions.
Action:
Shelley will meet with Jana to update and prepare a final draft with dates for the February
?
Meeting.
3. Workplan
?
Shelley reviewed items on the workplan with the committee, updating the following:
The Annual and End of Term surveys are moving as planned. The Environics Survey
o
completed this year, and previously completed 4 years ago, will continue to occur every
4 years as budget permits and will act as the End of Term survey. Work continues on
the annual survey with the Indicators Working Group.
Community Engagement Strategy is nearing completion, we are waiting on a few small
o
items, then the strategy will be provided to Communications and Marketing for the
finishing touches. Staff will be piloting the strategy for a 6 month period. This will be
discussed further at the February meeting.
Creating a Culture of Safety for Kitchener is an ongoing item. Several committees meet
o
on a regular basis with this as one of their goals.
The Diversity Strategy has been put on hold. Resources to complete the strategy are
o
not currently available and the internal Diversity Committee has decided to focus on
education and awareness building for 2010. The Workforce Census is planned and will
be completed in 2010.

The Healthy Communities Lens has changed slightly and will be reworked to serve as
o
more of a Strategic Plan lens. Discussion on this item continued, and the group agreed
to add it to the February Agenda for further discussion.
Engagement of youth/young adults will be a large focus in the WAYK2 citizen
o
engagement process.
Action:

4. Recruitment
?
Compass Kitchener currently has 9 members and the Terms of Reference allows for 12.
?
In reviewing current coverage, it would be beneficial to have additional coverage for the Arts
and Culture sector as well as Youth.
?
Compass Kitchener had a few suggestions of possible new members. Committee members
who made suggestions will contact individuals to see if they have interesting in joining the
committee for the remainder of this term.
?
It was also suggested to contact the Arts and Culture Committee and the Kitchener Youth
Action Council to see if they have possible representatives or suggestions of members from
the community.
?

5. General Business

Depending on outcome at tomorrows meeting with Shelley and the Indicators Working Group,
we may or may not hold a regular March meeting.

March 6 is set for the Compass Kitchener Advisory Committee All Committee Gathering.
