DELEGATION 3.0KW Multicultural Cinema Club: Azam Fouk Aladeh (Syrian filmmaker; arrived in Kitchener in 2003) Established not-for-profit KW Multicultural Cinema Club (MCC) in 2006 at the Working ? Centre. Only cinema club in the city. Inclusive: for filmmakers of all cultures. http://kwmcc.org/ ? Through its programming, MCC provides opportunities for: connection, networking, ? education, promotion, youth. Festivals: Produces annual film festival called “Local Focus”. Celebrates local artists. Juried o competition. Includes “people’s choice” award. th 9 film festival currently in development (March 2010), entries accepted until Jan. 15, o 2010 Winners receive a financial credit for equipment usage and recognition at celebration o Workshops: Topics: grants, sound, light, green screen technology, scriptwriting, editing, camera o lessons for adults Youth Programs: Animation camps (beginner and advanced); subsidized rates available. o Other projects: “Speaker’s Corner” style project called Freedom TV: camera set up at events for o members of the public to comment on topics of interest; clips shown on club web site Club may co-produce a member’s project and become part owner of the film; this assists o artists in getting projects done Club uses equipment to make videos for organizations at reduced rates o Produced 4 documentaries; sold 140 dvds; part of university collection o Equipment: Club secured a grant to equip a small studio; volunteers earn credits to use to rent club’s o equipment Equipment for rent o 1 December 2009 - ACAC Minutes ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ACAC) MINUTES Tuesday, December 15, 2009 CITY OF KITCHENER DISCUSSION ITEMS 4.0Kitchener multiculturalism (CPII recommendations #21-25) Three Amigos: Multicultural Theatre Space (MT Space—Majdi Bou Matar), Neruda (Isabel Cisterna), o Multicultural Cinema Club (MCC—Azam Fouk Aladeh) are discussing help/support for multicultural artists No program funding available o KW Multicultural Centre: Not for profit of long standing, has own location, has programs through schools, provides o employment support, linguistic support, liaison in libraries KW Multicultural Centre and MCC are not linked o Multicultural centre—should it advise newcomers of where to go for arts information and o assistance (like the MCC?) Waterloo Region Immigrant Employment Network (WRIEN): Not for profit organization, supported by Chamber of Commerce, the Region, and the o Province Could MT Space, Neruda, MCC, Multicultural Centre and WRIEN collaborate to meet ‘multicultural needs’? Prosperity Council (PC): MCC would work with Prosperity Council if opportunities are available o Discussion and questions were expressed about the PC’s “enabling organization” mandate o ACTION: Invite a representative from Prosperity Council (Roger Farwell, Jamie Martin, or Tim Jackson, and/or new Executive Director) to ACAC January or February 2010 meeting to talk about Enabling Organization’s scope. ACTION: Invite MT Space, Neruda, Multicultural Cinema Club, WRIEN and Multicultural Centre, Martin DeGroot to a special session in March to explore CPII recommendation #24: Volunteer mentor/host program for newcomers /multicultural artists 5.0Youth Arts Strategy: Do we need a Youth Arts Strategy? ? Need to work with youth to find out what they need in terms of the arts. ? Ask KYAC members for their views. ? How to reach the youth not in school? Facebook, Twitter, social networking… ? Schools are insular, Kitchener Youth Arts Council (KYAC) students mentioned that they want ? to raise awareness of programs, get word out about their arts activities Our terms of reference call for a youth member. We have to wait until new term ? Include private school population (Rockway, Woodland, St. John’s). ? ACTION: ACAC members to be invited by email to attend a Kitchener Youth Action Council meeting with Councillor Galloway (involved in KYAC) Collaborating with other committees Cheryl York met with Silvia DiDonato (DAC (Downtown Advisory Committee) and EDAC o (Economic Development Advisory Committee) staff resource person); Peter’s role of reporter of DAC activity to ACAC will be expanded to supply ACAC update to DAC ACTION: Rebecca Short (EDAC member) to be invited to attend an ACAC meeting along with Silvia DiDonato 2 December 2009 - ACAC Minutes ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ACAC) MINUTES Tuesday, December 15, 2009 CITY OF KITCHENER 6.0Subcommittee on Arts/Media update Subcommittee brought 11 questions to ACAC for consideration. These questions will go to ? media types at pre-meeting with sub committee in late January Susan Cudahy from Waterloo Regional Tourism and Marketing Corporation (WRTMC) knows ? media folks, and will set up the pre-meeting with media reps At pre-meeting, will assess if we should plan an info session for arts community about how ? arts organizations can best communicate with the media There will be another “Arts, Business, Creativity” workshop in 2010. This could be an ? appropriate arena for a “roundtable” with the arts community, and to disseminate information. Media handbook could be launched there. ACTION: subcommittee to report back to ACAC in February 2010 INFORMATION ITEMS 7.0Stefan Rose, 2010 Artist-in-residence Project is called “Grand River, Grand Conversations”. ? Includes photos of Grand River and its tributaries in Kitchener o Puts those bodies of water in context with environment o Stefan will talk with community members about the river, its significance in their o lives Will include poems by Stefan about the conversations and experiences taking photos o Panels will be displayed in Grand River Transit buses in April (Earth day) and o September (Word on the Street). Rotunda Gallery exhibition in December 2010 o Includes a talk in February 21 2-3 pm on contemporary photographers using large o format photography; other talks to be scheduled Email Stefan at: grandconversations@live.ca; web site: Grandconversations.spaces.live.com ? Promotional activities: interviewed for Daytime on Rogers, interviewed by Waterloo ? Chronicle (December 23 or 30, 2009 issue), Your Kitchener coming in January 2010. Grand River Conservation Authority will do something, too ACTION: Inform Kitchener Community News and Kitchener Citizen (2 papers, based on location) of program ACTION: coordinate creation of an invitation for February talk, distribute to ACAC and PAWG, committee members to distribute further 8.0Downtown Advisory Committee Report: Peter Hammond No report; Peter Hammond was unable to attend meeting ? 9.0Public Art Working Group (PAWG) Report: Alison Burkett McLennan Park Public Art: PAWG endorsed the McLennan Park Jury selection at its meeting on December 14, 2009. On a motion made by Len Carter, seconded by Betsy Petker “That ACAC endorse the selection of artist Gerry Houghton’s proposal for public art at McLennan Park entitled “Moments” 3 December 2009 - ACAC Minutes ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ACAC) MINUTES Tuesday, December 15, 2009 CITY OF KITCHENER Discussion: Jury met on December 2, 2009 to review 14 submissions for public art at the o expanded McLennan park and selected a three-dimensional sculpture expressing whimsy, family theme, informality, play recreation, community, fun Artist Gerry Houghton, is from Penticton, BC; has past experience o City to do installation o Artist proposed polished mild steel, sandblasted and clear coated (like a car); staff o has concerns about scratching and rusting. Artist now proposes Aluminum (heavy gauge)to address rust issue Hall’s lane: recommendation to staff from PAWG: not appropriate for public art; that ? $40,000 should go into pooled fund to top up other public art projects. Public Art on Cube: PAWG discussed cube projections, advises on public art on Berlin tower, ? still considering—must ensure highest quality, as this is a unique to Kitchener project Could cube host work by multicultural cinema club? MCC might help not-for-profits o make good quality programming for the cube—A couple of artists a year could be featured? Could have a student competition for art on Cube. 10.0Members Updates ACAC member Betsy Petker resigns to as she begins a new job as Principal of Rockway ? Mennonite Collegiate Radio Leacock, a play by Lost and Found Theatre shows from December 17-18 at the Conrad ? Centre.
